Coatbridge South (ward)
Coatbridge South is one of the twenty-one wards used to elect members of the North Lanarkshire Council. Covering neighbourhoods in the south-east of Coatbridge (Calderwood, Carnbroe, Greenend, Kirkshaws, Rosehall, Shawhead, Sikeside, Victoria Park and Whifflet Whifflet ( sco, The Whufflit, gd, Magh na Cruithneachd) is now a suburb of Coatbridge, Scotland, which once formed its own distinctive village. North Lanarkshire ( sco, North Lanrikshire; gd, Siorrachd Lannraig a Tuath) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the northeast of the City of Glasgow and contains many of Glasgow's suburbs and commuter towns and villages. It also borders East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk (council area), Falkirk, Stirling (council area), Stirling, South Lanarkshire and West Lothian. Coatbridge
Coatbridge ( sco, Cotbrig or Coatbrig, gd, Drochaid a' Chòta) is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, about east of Glasgow city centre, set in the central Lowlands. Along with neighbouring town Airdrie, Coatbridge forms the area known as the Monklands (population approximately 90,000 including outlying settlements), often considered to be part of the Greater Glasgow urban area – although officially they have not been included in population figures since 2016 due to small gaps between the Monklands and Glasgow built-up areas. In the last years of the 18th century, the area developed from a loose collection of hamlets into the town of Coatbridge. The town's development and growth have been intimately connected with the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution, and in particular with the hot blast process. Carnbroe
Carnbroe is a neighbourhood in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. A former industrial village, Carnbroe is located southeast of Coatbridge and southwest of neighbouring Airdrie. It lies above a meander of the North Calder Water, which flows around it in a steep gorge. Once it was a collier village and had large ironworks, the Calder Iron Works, which was built in 1838 immediately to the north, on the opposite bank of the river. It closed in 1921 and the village grew to occupy that site. Carnbroe now has a primary school, a grocery store, and a private nursery. The neighbourhood underwent a major extension, expanding over the North Calder Water, where further housing estates were built, as well as a state-of-the-art community centre. This also gave access to the village from Whifflet. Earl Grove Estate is in Greenend. Carbroe's village status is a hotly contested topic. Whifflet
Whifflet ( sco, The Whufflit, gd, Magh na Cruithneachd) is now a suburb of Coatbridge, Scotland, which once formed its own distinctive village. It is referred to locally as 'The Whifflet' (and pronounced ''whiff-lit''). Presently located in the North Lanarkshire Council area it was originally known as wheat flats (hence the vernacular pronunciation) but over time the name appears to have developed into Whifflet. It is dominated by its main street, Whifflet Street, which has many shops including an old sweet shop Tommy Tangos, pubs and bookmakers and is towered over by the post-war built Calder flats. The two most prominent tower blocks are on Whifflet St. Whifflet is an area of Coatbridge which, historically, has been the centre of a lot of mining activity. A725 Road
The A725 road in Scotland is a major route which is a trunk road dual carriageway for almost its whole length, connecting several of the large towns of North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire, linking the M8 and M74 motorways; it has been upgraded frequently since its construction, with the most recent major work completed in 2017. In combination with the A726 road which meets the M77 motorway, it forms a southern and eastern bypass for the city of Glasgow. 2007 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 3 May 2007, the same day as the other Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament general election. The election was the first one using 20 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward will elect three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system a form of proportional representation. The new wards replace 70 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Labour managed to retain control of the council, something which the party failed to do in many other parts of Scotland. Overall they lost 14 seats, most of which went to the Scottish National Party, although the individual seats won by the Conservative Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats were noteworthy in that these parties had never been represented on North Lanarkshire Council before. 2012 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 70 Councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw Labour retain their traditional position as the largest party on the Council as they gained 1 seat from 2007 and retained their overall majority. The Scottish National Party also increased their representation and remained in second place on the authority with 3 net gains. Both the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats were wiped out losing their single Council seats. 2017 North Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to North Lanarkshire Council were held on 4 May 2017, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election utilised twenty-one wards with 77 Councillors being elected. This represented an increase of 7 seats and 1 additional ward when compared to 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw the Scottish National Party overtake Labour as the largest party on the council. Despite the SNP winning the most seats and most votes, North Lanarkshire was run by a Labour administration supported by the Scottish Conservatives.
