The coat of arms of the City of Skopje ( mk, Грб на Скопје) is an emblem in the form of a renaissance shield, depicting the Šar Mountains, the Skopje Fortress, the Vardar river and the Stone Bridge, all important landmarks of the city and North Macedonia as a whole. Replacement proposals The coat of arms of Skopje has been categorized as "near-heraldic" in the Macedonian Heraldic Society's review of municipal symbols in Macedonia due to being a landscape composition with several charges. The society had suggested a heraldic revision of the symbol, which resulted in several alternative proposals. However the proposals haven't gotten to the point of being considered by the government and Bulgarians wanted to be changed. Skopje ( , , ; mk, Скопје ; sq, Shkup) is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic centre. The territory of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC; remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city centre. Originally a Paeonian city, Scupi became the capital of Dardania in the second century BC. On the eve of the 1st century AD, the settlement was seized by the Romans and became a military camp. When the Roman Empire was divided into eastern and western halves in 395 AD, Scupi came under Byzantine rule from Constantinople. ''Quercus trojana'', the Macedonian oak is an oak in the turkey oak section ( ''Quercus'' sect. ''Cerris''). It is native to southeast Europe and southwest Asia, from southern Italy east across the southern Balkans (Croatia, Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece) to western Turkey, growing at low to moderate altitudes (up to in the south of the range in southwestern Turkey), in dry areas. Description ''Quercus trojana'' is a small to medium-sized tree reaching tall, late deciduous to semi-evergreen, with gray-green leaves long and 1.5–4 cm broad with a coarsely serrated margin with sharply pointed teeth. The flag of Skopje (in mk, Знаме на Скопје) is a red vertical banner in proportions 1:2 with the coat of arms of the city in golden-yellow placed in its left upper quarter. The coat of arms has the form of a shield and on it are pictured: the Stone Bridge with the Vardar River, the fortress Kale and the snowy peaks of a mountain. The old flag of Skopje in Socialist Yugoslavia was seen in an exhibition of Socialist partner cities of Dresden (then in the German Democratic Republic), in the beginning of the 1980s. Šar Mountains
The Šar Mountains ( Serbian and mk, Шар Планина, Šar Planina, colloquially also ) or Sharr Mountains ( sq, Malet e Sharrit), form a mountain range in the Balkans that extends from Kosovo and the northwest of North Macedonia to northeastern Albania. The section in Kosovo is a national park, and the section in North Macedonia became a national park on 30 June 2021. Rule Of Tincture
The most basic rule of heraldic design is the rule of tincture: metal should not be put on metal, nor colour on colour (Humphrey Llwyd, 1568). This means that the heraldic metals or and argent (gold and silver, represented by yellow and white) should not be placed on each other, nor may any of the ''colours'' (i.e. azure, gules, sable, vert and purpure, along with some other rarer examples) be placed on another colour. Heraldic furs (i.e. ermine, vair and their variants) as well as "proper" (a charge coloured as it normally is in naturealthough that may be as defined by heralds) are exempt from the rule of tincture. The rule seems to have operated from the inception of the age of heraldry, i.e. about 1200–1215, but seemingly was never written down.
