Coal mining in Bangladesh started with the discovery of the first coal mine in Jamalganj in 1962. Mining in Bangladesh consists mainly of coal, granite, natural gas, and petroleum mining. History In Pre-partition era of British India, coal from Garo hills of Meghalaya was transported and traded through East Bengal. Mining offices opened in Dhaka and trade was aided by British Rail network in India. Nonviolent Movement Opposing Open Pit Mining In Bangladesh From 2006 - 2014
The indigenous people of Phulbari, Bangladesh, fought against the use of open-pit mining from August 26, 2006, to February 6, 2014. Open pit mining would displace thousands of people, as well as destroy farmland, and divert water sources for use in the mining process. Overview BHP, an Australian mining company, discovered coal in Phulbari between 1994 and 1997. Upon discovering that the depth of the coal deposits would result in destructive mining activity, BHP sold its right to mine to London based Asia Energy Corporation. Asia Energy Corporation proposed an open pit mine project, and estimated that it would take thirty-six years to mine the deposit. The Bangladesh Department of Environment approved the open pit mine project by granting it "Environmental Clearance for Mining" on September 11, 2005. Barapukuria Coal Scam
Barapukuria coal scam is a sensational corruption scandal of Bangladesh concerning the misappropriation of around 142 hundred thousand tons of coal, worth over BDT 227 billion by officials of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) from the coal mine of Barapukuria, Dinajpur District, in northern Bangladesh. The scandal was revealed in July 2018 when a board member of Bangladesh Power Development Board went to visit the coal mine and found no fresh coal whereas according to the document there should have been around 142 hundred thousand tons of coal reserved. The matter came in light when a Bangladeshi English-language daily reported the incident. Petrobangla, the parent organization of the BCMCL, promptly suspended a few officials in this connection while the Anti-Corruption Commission started an inquiry to trace the corruption.
