Coal Point
Coal Point is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia on a peninsula south-east of the towns of Toronto and Carey Bay, on the western side of Lake Macquarie. History Coal mining was performed at Ebenezer Colliery Coal Point from 1841 to around 1906. The first coal mine was operated by Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, a missionary to the Awabakal people, local entrepreneur and the first European landholder of 'Punte', the Coal Point to Toronto area. The Division of Hunter is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. The division was named after Captain John Hunter, the second Governor of New South Wales. It covers rural, regional and suburban areas centered on the Hunter Region, including the towns of Singleton, Muswellbrook and Cessnock. Toronto () is a lakeside suburb within the city of Lake Macquarie, Greater Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, approximately from Newcastle's central business district and is a commercial hub for the sprawling suburbs on the western shore of the lake. Ebenezer Colliery
Ebenezer Colliery was a coal mine located at Coal Point, New South Wales, Australia. Reverend Lancelot Edward Threlkeld began mining at the south west point of Coal Point near Toronto in 1840, after the failure of his aboriginal mission. The mine was worked by hand and the skips run on wooden rails. The coal was loaded into vessels from a large wooden jetty. Due to the shallow channel at Swansea the coal was taken to a coal loading and storage depot at the head of Lake Macquarie, known as Reid's Mistake, where it was loaded upon oceangoing vessels. Lancelot Edward Threlkeld
Lancelot Edward Threlkeld (20 October 1788 – 10 October 1859) was an English missionary, primarily based in Australia. He was married twice and survived by sons and daughters from both marriages. Thelkeld is known for his work with Biraban in recording and publishing English translations of the Awabakal language. Early life Born in Southwark, England, now in south London, on 20 October 1788, Threlkeld was son of Samuel Joseph Threlkeld, a brush-maker, and his wife Mary. In 1813 he began training as an evangelical missionary with the London Missionary Society (LMS). His missionary career began in 1814, with an assignment to the Society Islands. Missionary life Evangelist Threlkeld was well educated, and on 8 November 1815 sailed for Tahiti, but the illness and subsequent death of a child of his detained him for a year in Rio de Janeiro, where he started a Protestant church. Awabakal People
The Awabakal people , are those Aboriginal Australians who identify with or are descended from the Awabakal tribe and its clans, Indigenous to the coastal area of what is now known as the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Their traditional territory spread from Wollombi in the west, to the Lower Hunter River near Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the north. The name Kuringgai, also written Guringai, has often been used as a collective denominator of the Awabakal and several other tribes in this belt, but Norman Tindale has challenged it as an arbitrary coinage devised by ethnologist John Fraser in 1892. For Tindale, Kuringgai was synonymous with Awabakal.
