Clément-Bayard No.1
__NOTOC__ The Clément-Bayard No.1, Bayard-Clément was a French military semi-rigid airship of 1908 developed by Astra Clément-Bayard, which was founded by industrial entrepreneur Adolphe Clément-Bayard, in response to a French Army decision to experiment with airship operations. Société Astra was contracted to build the envelope, while Clément-Bayard built the gondola and engines itself. The envelope's distinctive design featured four large lobes at the aft end, intended to provide directional stability. Testing commenced on 29 October with Henry Kapferer at the controls. By the end of the year, the airship had made nearly thirty flights, including long-range cross-country sorties of up to , breaking the national aerial endurance and speed records. Lucien Chauvière
Lucien Chauvière (1876–1966) was a French aeronautical engineer. He is best known for his ''Integrale'' propellers, which were the first aerodynamically advanced propellers manufactured in Europe. Lucien Chauvière was born in Paris on 11 February 1876. and educated at Arts et Métiers ParisTech in Angers, where his studies included the theory of propeller design. He became a member of the Aero-Club de France in December 1906, sponsored by the engineer Andre Farcot. The same month he exhibited an apparatus designed to investigate the stability of helicopters at the Aero-Club's exhibit at the annual Salon d'Automobile. Louis Henri Capazza (1862–1928) was a French semi-professional balloonist. He was born in Bastia, Corsica on January 17, 1862. , ''...which a Corsican named Capazza, coming from the town of Bastia, has invented...'' He lived in Belgium from 1892–1898 then emigrated to the United States in about 1920. He died on December 28, 1928, in Paris after contracting pneumonia in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Nicholas II
Nicholas II or Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov; spelled in pre-revolutionary script. Adolphe Clément-Bayard
Gustave Adolphe Clément, from 1909 Clément-Bayard (22 September 1855 – 10 March 1928), was a French entrepreneur. An orphan who became a blacksmith and a ''Compagnons du Tour de France, Compagnon du Tour de France'', he went on to race and manufacture bicycles, pneumatic tyres, motorcycles, automobiles, aeroplanes and airships. In 1894, he was a passenger in the winning vehicle in the world's first competitive motor event. Albert Lemaître's Peugeot was judged to be the winner of the Paris–Rouen (motor race), Paris–Rouen 'Competition for Horeseless Carriages' (''Concours des Voitures sans Chevaux''). Astra Clément-Bayard
Astra Clément-Bayard was a French manufacturer of dirigibles. In 1908 the French industrialist Adolphe Clément-Bayard, who had already made a fortune manufacturing cars, motorcycles and bicycles, diversified into the aviation industry. His first project was a lens-shaped airship designed by Louis Capazza, which was never built. He then collaborated with the Société Astra (Société Astra des Constructions Aéronautiques) on the manufacture of a more conventional craft. Astra were responsible for the manufacture of the envelope, and Clement-Bayard took responsibility for the nacelle and engine. After this collaborative effort the company started manufacturing the envelopes as well, at a new factory in La Motte-Breuil built in anticipation of orders from the French Army, who had decided to commence airship operations.
