Cluff Gold Plc
Cluff was a BBC TV detective television series set in the fictional town of Gunnershaw in the Yorkshire Dales. Based on the eponymous novels by Gil North, it featured Leslie Sands in the title role as Sergeant Caleb Cluff, and ran for two series between 1964-1965. The series was filmed around Skipton, North's hometown. The entire first series including the pilot is missing from the BBC archives, but the second series has survived. The script for all episodes of this two-part series were written by North himself. Gil North
Gil North (real name Geoffrey Horne; 12 July 1916 – 5 August 1988) was a British author of Detective fiction, detective stories. His novels about Sergeant Cluff, based in Yorkshire, were made into a television series, ''Cluff'', by the BBC, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the 1960s. North was born in Skipton, Yorkshire, and educated at Ermysted's Grammar School and Christ's College, Cambridge. He married Betty Duthie in 1949. He died in Skipton in 1988. From 1938 to 1955, North was a Civil Servant in the United Kingdom's African colonies. Michael Bates (actor)
Michael Hammond Bates (4 December 1920 – 11 January 1978) was a British actor born in India. He was best known for playing Chief Guard Barnes who processes (and strip-searches) Alex (Malcolm McDowell) in ''A Clockwork Orange'', Cyril Blamire in ''Last of the Summer Wine'' (1973–75), and Rangi Ram in ''It Ain't Half Hot Mum'' (1974–77). Early life Bates was born in Jhansi, United Provinces, India. His parents were of Cheshire families; his father, Henry Stuart "Harry" Bates (1893–1985), son of Albert Bates, of Congleton, Cheshire,Kelly's Handbook to the Titled, Landed and Official Classes, 1969, pg. 224 was educated at Denstone School and Cambridge University before entering the Indian Civil Service in 1920. Eric Leslie Barker (12 February 1912 – 1 June 1990) was an English comedy actor. He is most remembered for his roles in the popular British ''Carry On'' films, although he only appeared in the early films in the series, apart from returning for ''Carry On Emmannuelle'' in 1978. Career Eric Barker was born in Thornton Heath, London, on 20 February 1912, the youngest of three children. He was brought up in Croydon, Surrey, and educated at Whitgift School. Leslie Sands (19 May 1921 – 9 May 2001) was a British actor and writer of TV and film. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, Sands usually specialized in dour types in authority, often policemen. He was married to Pauline Williams (1950 - 9 May 2001) (his death). The Yorkshire Dales is an upland area of the Pennines in the Historic counties of England, historic county of Yorkshire, England, most of it in the Yorkshire Dales National Park created in 1954. The Dales comprise river valleys and the hills rising from the Vale of York westwards to the hilltops of the Pennine Drainage divide, watershed. In Ribblesdale, Dentdale and Garsdale, the area extends westwards across the watershed, but most of the valleys drain eastwards to the Vale of York, into the River Ouse, Yorkshire, Ouse and the Humber.
