Club de Golf Chapultepec is a golf club in Naucalpan, just outside Mexico City, Mexico. It has hosted the Mexican Open multiple times, and has hosted the WGC-Mexico Championship 4 times between 2017 and 2020. Description A tree-lined parkland course with tight fairways and undulating terrain, it is built approximately 1.36 miles (more than 7,800 feet) above sea level, which results in much longer ball flights. History In 1904 Scotsman and former U.S. Open winner Willie Smith moved to the Country Club of Mexico City to become a club professional. He was tasked with designing a new course, however he died before it could be completed. His brother and two-time U.S. Open winner, Alex Smith, completed the course in 1921. Naucalpan
Naucalpan, officially Naucalpan de Juárez, is one of 125 municipalities located just northwest of Mexico City in the adjoining State of Mexico. The municipal seat is the city of Naucalpan de Juárez, which extends into the neighboring municipality of Huixquilucan. The name Naucalpan comes from Nahuatl and means "place of the four neighborhoods" or "four houses." Juárez was added to the official name in 1874 in honor of Benito Juárez. The history of the area begins with the Tlatilica who settled on the edges of the Hondo River between 1700 and 600 B.C.E., but it was the Mexica who gave it its current name when they dominated it from the 15th century until the Spanish conquest of the Mexica Empire. The Mexican Open ( es, Abierto Mexicano de Golf), also known as the Mexico Open and Abierto Mexicano de Golf, is the national open golf tournament of Mexico. History First played in 1944 at the Club de Golf Chapultepec, it was an event on the Tour de las Américas between 2003 and 2006, being co-sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour from 2004 to 2006. It became a Nationwide Tour event in 2008, and was rescheduled from December to January, which resulted in no tournament in 2007. Due to the outbreak of swine flu in 2009, the Mexican Open was rescheduled from May to September. In 2013, the tournament was moved to March and became an official event for PGA Tour Latinoamérica. WGC-Mexico Championship
The WGC Championship was a professional golf tournament that was held between 1999 and 2021. It was one of the three or four annual World Golf Championships until the number of WGC events was reduced to two following the 2021 season. Under sponsorship agreements, the WGC Championship was titled as the WGC-American Express Championship (1999–2006), when it was hosted at various locations in Europe and the United States; the WGC-CA Championship (2007–2010), then the WGC-Cadillac Championship (2011–2016), when it was hosted at Doral Golf Resort, Florida; and the WGC-Mexico Championship (2017–2020), when it was played at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico. Willie Smith (golfer)
Willie Smith (8 October 1876 – 26 December 1916) was a Scottish golfer. He won the 1899 U.S. Open. Early life Willie Smith was born in Dundee, Scotland on 8 October 1876. He learned to play golf in Carnoustie. His brothers Alex and Macdonald were also expert golfers. Golf career 1899 U.S. Open Smith worked as a club professional at Midlothian Country Club, near Chicago, in his early adulthood. During this time he won the 1899 U.S. Open, played at Baltimore Country Club's Roland Park Course. He won by a margin of eleven shots. This record wasn't broken during the entire 20th century and wasn't surpassed until Tiger Woods won the 2000 championship by fifteen shots. Smith's prize was $150. Alex Smith (golfer)
Alexander Smith (28 January 1874 – 21 April 1930) was a Scottish-American professional golfer who played in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was a member of a famous Scottish golfing family. His brother Willie won the U.S. Open in 1899, and Alex won it in both 1906 and 1910. Like many British professionals of his era he spent much of his adult life working as a club professional in the United States. It was the 20th time the WGC Championship was played, and the first of the World Golf Championships events to be staged in 2019. The approximate elevation of the course's clubhouse is Dustin Johnson eased to a 5 stroke victory ahead of Rory McIlroy to win his third WGC Championship (second in Mexico), and sixth World Golf Championship overall. The 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship was a golf tournament played February 20–23 at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Naucalpan, Mexico, just west of Mexico City. It was the 21st time the WGC Championship is played, and the first of the World Golf Championships events to be staged in 2020. The approximate elevation of the course's clubhouse is Patrick Reed won his second WGC Championship (first in Mexico), by a single stroke ahead of Bryson DeChambeau. DeChambeau was leading heading into the final stages, but scored an aggregate one-over-par on the final 4 holes, whereas Reed birdied the 15th, 16th, and 17th.
