Club Atlético Güemes, known as Atlético Güemes or simply Güemes, is an Argentine sports club based in Santiago del Estero, founded on 12 October 1932. The club is mostly known for its football team, which currently plays in Primera Nacional, the second division of the Argentine league system. Other sports practised at the club are basketball, roller skating, five-a-side football, judo and cestoball. History Founded on 12 October 1932 as an honour to military leader Martín Miguel de Güemes, the club mainly played in regional competitions. In 1986, after winning the previous year's ''Torneo Regional'', they featured in the 1986 Liguilla Pre-Libertadores, being knocked out by Ferro Carril Oeste in the qualifying rounds. Santiago del Estero (, Spanish for ''Saint-James-Upon-The-Lagoon'') is the capital of Santiago del Estero Province in northern Argentina. It has a population of 252,192 inhabitants, () making it the twelfth largest city in the country, with a surface area of 2,116 km². It lies on the Dulce River and on National Route 9, at a distance of 1,042 km north-northwest from Buenos Aires. Primera Nacional (usually called simply Nacional B, in English "National B Division", and known as Primera B Nacional until the 2019–20 season) is the second division of the Argentine football league system. The competition is made up of 37 teams. It is played by teams from all over the country. Clubs from Buenos Aires surroundings, as well as some from Santa Fe Province, are promoted from or relegated to the Primera B Metropolitana ("Metropolitan B Division") while for teams from the other provinces the Torneo Federal A ("Federal A Tournament") is the next level down. The 2020 Argentine Torneo Federal A also known as the 2020 Torneo Transición Federal A, was the eighth season of the Torneo Federal A, the regionalised third tier of the Argentine football league system. The tournament is reserved for teams indirectly affiliated to the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), while teams affiliated to AFA have to play the Primera B Metropolitana, which is the other third tier competition. The competition was contested by 26 of the 30 teams that took part in the 2019–20 season, which was suspended and subsequently abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was optional to participate in this season. The 2019–20 Argentine Torneo Federal A, was the seventh season of the Torneo Federal A, the regionalised third tier of the Argentine football league system. The tournament is reserved for teams indirectly affiliated to the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), while teams affiliated to AFA have to play the Primera B Metropolitana, which is the other third tier competition. The champions are promoted to Primera B Nacional. 30 teams competed in the league, 25 returning from the 2018–19 season, one team that was relegated from Primera B Nacional and four teams promoted from the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur. The regular season began on 1 September 2019 and was expected to end in June 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Argentine Football Association suspended the tournament on 17 March 2020. The 2016 Argentine Torneo Federal A, was the 3rd season of the third tier of the Argentine football league system. The Torneo Federal A (in English "Federal A Tournament") is one of the two professional leagues that form the regionalised third level of the Argentine football league system, along with Primera B Metropolitana. The competition was established in 2014 as a result of a change in the structure of the league system, replacing Torneo Argentino A. Federal A is organised by "Consejo Federal", a division of the Argentine Football Association. Clubs in Federal A have indirect membership in AFA unlike clubs in Primera B, which have direct membership. The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) is an international organization dedicated to collecting statistics about association football.
