It was initially launched and referred to as New York Yacht Club 42 as the design was commissioned by the club following a tendering process. The boat has had significant racing success, both as a one-design and under rating rules such as IRC and ORC, and was used for the biennial Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup from the event's inception in 2009 through 2017. The designers Nautor has worked with four naval architects during its history. The original designer Sparkman & Stephens had a long association with Nautor and were responsible for the first 775 yachts sold. These early designs combined a luxurious interior in a fiberglass hull with features that were then current in successful racing boats, such as the separation of the skeg-hung rudder from the keel. They won numerous races including the Cowes Week in 1968, the Bermuda Race in 1972 by Swan 48, followed by even bigger success in 1974, when a ketch rigged Swan 65 by the name '' Sayula II'' won the first ever Whitbread Round the World Race. New York Yacht Club
The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) is a private social club and yacht club based in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1844 by nine prominent sportsmen. The members have contributed to the sport of yachting and yacht design. As of 2001, the organization was reported to have about 3,000 members. Membership in the club is by invitation only. Its officers include a commodore, vice-commodore, rear-commodore, secretary and treasurer. The club is headquartered at the New York Yacht Club Building in New York City. The America's Cup trophy was won by members in 1851 and held by the NYYC until 1983.
