Clonmel Oil Chase
The Clonmel Oil Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase in Ireland which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Clonmel over a distance of about 2 miles and 4 furlongs (2 miles 4 furlongs and 51 yards, or 4,070 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in November. The event is named after its sponsor, the Clonmel Oil Company. It was first run in 1992 over 3 miles in December and was initially known as the Morris Oil Chase. It was cut by half a mile in 1994, and at the same time it was moved to November. The race was given Grade 3 status in 1995, and it was promoted to Grade 2 level the following year. It was first run under its present title in 2003. Charlie Swan (horse Trainer)
Charlie Swan (born 20 January 1968) is a former top National Hunt jockey in Ireland in the 1990s. He is associated with the great Istabraq, on whom he won three Champion Hurdles. He was twice top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival and was champion National Hunt jockey in Ireland for nine consecutive years. After retiring as a jockey he spent several years a trainer, based in Modreeny near Cloughjordan, County Tipperary. First and only son to Donald Swan, a former British Army Captain, and his wife Teresa, Charlie was named after an ancestor who was the surgeon to the British King 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. Thomas Richard Dunwoody MBE (born 18 January 1964 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a retired British jockey in National Hunt racing. He was a three-time Champion Jockey. Racing career Dunwoody's race victories include the King George VI Chase four times - twice on Desert Orchid in 1989 and 1990 and twice on One Man in 1995 and 1996. He also won the 1986 and 1994 Grand Nationals on West Tip and Miinnehoma respectively, the 1988 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Charter Party and the Champion Hurdle on Kribensis. Fergus "Fergie" Sutherland was an Irish National Hunt trainer and soldier, who was best known for training Imperial Call to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1996. Early life Sutherland was named after Fergus Bowes-Lyon, a brother of the Queen Mother who was killed during the Battle of Loos; Bowes-Lyon had been a friend of Sutherland's father Arthur. Although Sutherland was born in London he spent most of his childhood in Scotland near the town of Peebles. He spent his summers at the Somerset seaside village of Porlock where prominent trainer Dick Hern taught him how to ride. Military career He received his education at Eton and Sandhurst. Gerry "Podge" O'Neill (13 April 1919 – 1 August 2004) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). O'Neill first played senior football with Chiltern in the Chiltern & District Football Association as a 17 year in 1936. He played in their 1936 and 1940 premiership teams and won the 1940 Chiltern & District Football Association best and fairest award, the Azzi Medal. O'Neill then moved to Melbourne and played with North Footscray 1941, then with Kingsville in 1942. Imperial Call
Imperial Call (21 February 1989 – 29 November 2014) was an Irish racehorse. He was a specialist steeplechaser who ran thirty-two times and won sixteen races under National Hunt rules. After showing promise as a hurdler and novice chaser, Imperial Call emerged as a top-class jumper with a win in the Hennessy Gold Cup in February 1996. A month later, he became the first Irish-trained horse for ten years to win Britain's most prestigious steeplechase, the Cheltenham Gold Cup. His subsequent career was disrupted by injury problems but he won further major races including the Punchestown Chase in 1998 and the Punchestown Gold Cup in 1999. Unlike most modern racehorses, Imperial Call was not a Thoroughbred. Background Imperial Call was a "leggy, sparely made" brown horse bred in County Wexford, Ireland by T. A. O'Donnell. Michael "Mouse" Morris, formally the Hon. Michael Morris, (born 4 April 1951) is an Irish racehorse trainer and former amateur and professional jockey. As a trainer, he has won the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and has won the Irish Grand National twice. In 2016, he won both the Grand National and Irish Grand National double.
