Clive Gartner
Clive Gartner is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s. He played for Canterbury-Bankstown in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. Background Gartner played his junior rugby league for Belmore before joining Canterbury in 1956. Playing career Gartner initially played reserve grade for Canterbury occasionally being called up to the first grade side. Gartner played in the 1960 semi final loss against Eastern Suburbs. Gartner missed both the 1961 and 1962 seasons due to a shoulder injury. He returned to the first team in 1963 but missed the entire 1964 season due to a broken jaw. The 1964 season also finished for a wooden spoon as the club finished last. Bob McCarthy
Bob McCarthy MBE (born 5 August 1946) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer and coach. He played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, New South Wales and for the Australian national side. He later coached in Brisbane, taking Souths Magpies to a premiership in 1981 and coaching the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants upon their entry to the Winfield Cup. Since 2001 he has been the chairman of both the Australian and NSW state selection panels. Canterbury-Bankstown is a customary region of Sydney, Australia, in the south-western suburbs. Les Johns
Les Johns (born 1942 in Newcastle, New South Wales) is a former Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and early 1970s. Club career Les Johns started his career at Newcastle's Souths club. He then played nine seasons for the Canterbury-Bankstown club between 1963–1971. He scored 14 tries and 233 goals and 19 field goals for Canterbury-Bankstown during his career. He has been named among the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century. He was a fullback of considerable flair and on his day could be one of the most brilliant attacking and defensive players in the game. Early life Brown was born in Belmore, Sydney, and played his junior rugby league for Lakemba United. Brown is one of four brothers to have played for Canterbury. Playing career Brown made his first grade debut for Canterbury in 1960 against rivals Parramatta. Over the coming years, Brown became a regular in first grade and in 1967 the club reached its first grand final in a number of seasons defeating 11-year reigning premiers St George in the process. In the 1967 grand final against Souths, Brown started at hooker as Souths lead the match early on by a score of 5–2.
