Clinton Township was a township located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States, which existed from 1834 to 1902. Clinton Township was created on April 14, 1834, from portions of Elizabeth Township, Newark Township, Orange Township and Union Township. Clinton Hill is a neighborhood within the south-central portion of the city of Newark in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It is centered at Clinton Avenue, and bounded roughly by Elizabeth Avenue in the east, Hawthorne Avenue in the south, Avon Avenue in the north, and Irvington in the west. Upper Clinton Hill is predominantly residential, with many of the homes also being the offices of professionals. Most retail activity along Clinton and Hawthorne Avenues is in the form of neighborhood-oriented convenience-type stores. Clinton Cemetery is cemetery in Irvington, Essex County, New Jersey. The non-sectarian lot-owner owned cemetery comprises near Union Avenue and Lyons Avenue; the Elizabeth River lies at its western boundary. There have been approximately 11,000 burials. History Clinton Cemetery Association was founded on Feb 28, 1844. At the time Irvington was beginning to form as Camptown, an unincorporated village in the no-longer extant Clinton Township. In 1852 Camptown's name was changed to Irvington. An 1889 report of the Department of Health of the State of New Jersey found with respect to the township of Clinton: "There are two cemeteries, or burial-places, in the township – Clinton cemetery, in the village and upon the banks of Elizabeth river, and Newark potter's field, down in the salt meadow section". A village, in the context of New Jersey local government, is one of five types and one of eleven forms of municipal government. The Village Act of 1891 defined the form of government to consist of a five-member board of trustees to be elected to three-year staggered terms. One member serves as president, one member serves as treasurer. This act was repealed by the State Legislature in 1961. The Village Act of 1989 changed the essence of the Village form of government, essentially eliminating it in all but name. South Orange, officially the Township of South Orange Village, is a suburban township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the village's population was 16,198, reflecting a decline of 766 (4.5%) from the 16,964 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 574 (+3.5%) from the 16,390 counted in the 1990 Census. Francis Bowen (; September 8, 1811 – January 22, 1890) was an American philosopher, writer, and educationalist. Biography He was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was educated at Mayhew School, Boston, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Harvard University, graduating from the latter in 1833. While attending Harvard, he taught school at Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, and Concord, Lexington and Northborough, Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard, he taught for two years at Phillips Exeter Academy, returning to Harvard from 1835 to 1839 to tutor in Greek and teach intellectual philosophy and political economy. In 1839 he went to Europe, and, while living in Paris, met Sismondi, de Gerando, and other scholars. He returned to Cambridge in 1841 and devoted himself to literature.
