Clinton A. Puckett
Clinton A. Puckett (March 6, 1926 – September 3, 2002) was a United States Marine who served as the 6th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps from February 1, 1973, until he retired from active duty on May 31, 1975. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War; receiving the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism for actions in Korea. He was the last Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps to have served in World War II. Early life and career Born on March 6, 1926, in Waurika, Oklahoma, Puckett grew up in Roswell, New Mexico. He joined the United States Marine Corps on 18 February 1944 at Santa Fe, New Mexico, and went through recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. Moving north, he joined the 5th Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. He trained with the division and as a rifleman and landed in the Battle of Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945. Waurika is the county seat of Jefferson County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,064 at the 2010 census, a 4.36 percent decrease from 2,158 at the 2000 census. An article from 1985 in ''The Oklahoman'' claimed that Waurika promoted itself as "The Parakeet Capital of the World". It gave no explanation for using this slogan. The Waurika Chamber of Commerce website in 2020 echoes that the town was "once a parakeet paradise," but currently seems to be promoting the motto ''On The Trail, By The Lake'', complete with a logo of a cowboy bronc-riding a fish. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the United States. 5th Marine Division (United States)
The 5th Marine Division was a United States Marine Corps ground combat division which was activated on 11 November 1943 (officially activated on 21 January 1944) at Camp Pendleton, California during World War II. The 5th Division saw its first combat action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 where it sustained the highest number of casualties of the three Marine divisions of the V Amphibious Corps (invasion force). The 5th Division was to be part of the planned invasion of the Japan homeland before Japan surrendered. Marine Corps Recruit Depot (commonly referred to as MCRD) San Diego is a United States Marine Corps military installation in San Diego, California.
