Clinton, Kansas
Clinton is an unincorporated community on a peninsula next to Clinton Lake in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. History Bloomington The community of Bloomington was settled in June 1854 but was not called as such until April 1855 when Harrison Burson applied to the U.S. Government for a post office. Within eight months of the area being settled some 530 settlers were in the area that would become Bloomington-Clinton. The people of Bloomington were greatly anti-slavery and helped slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. In early 1857, the north half of Bloomington was moved to a new location and the south portion of the community was renamed Winchester. Winchester Winchester was named after a city in Illinois as was Bloomington. Later in the year Bloomington acted to become an incorporated city with Winchester following suit four days later. Lone Star, Kansas
Lone Star is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It is located southwest of Lawrence. History The first settlers arrived in 1854, many of whom were either southern colonists or sympathizers who wanted slavery to be legal in the Kansas Territory. However, by 1860, many of these individuals had returned to the south or given up the cause. When William Quantrill razed Lawrence in 1863, some of his men traveled down south and passed near Lone Star. The settlement was initially known as "Bond"which was the name of its first postmaster. The post office was open from 1875 until 1953. According to the ''Lawrence Journal-World'' Lone Star was named as such after a group of settlers saw a star in the sky while trying to think of a suitable name for their community's school. Lawrence Massacre
The Lawrence Massacre, also known as Quantrill's Raid, was an attack during the American Civil War (186165) by Quantrill's Raiders, a Confederate guerrilla group led by William Quantrill, on the Unionist town of Lawrence, Kansas, killing around 150 unarmed men and boys. The attack on the morning of Friday, August 21, 1863 targeted Lawrence due to the town's long support of abolition and its reputation as a center for the Jayhawkers, who were free-state militia and vigilante groups known for attacking plantations in pro-slavery Missouri's western counties. Background By 1863, Kansas had long been the center of strife and warfare over the admission of slave versus free states. William Quantrill
William Clarke Quantrill (July 31, 1837 – June 6, 1865) was a Confederate guerrilla leader during the American Civil War. Having endured a tempestuous childhood before later becoming a schoolteacher, Quantrill joined a group of bandits who roamed the Missouri and Kansas countryside to apprehend escaped slaves. Later, the group became Confederate soldiers, who were referred to as "Quantrill's Raiders". It was a pro-Confederate partisan ranger outfit that was best known for its often brutal guerrilla tactics. Also notable is that the group included the young Jesse James and his older brother Frank James. Quantrill is often noted as influential in the minds of many bandits, outlaws and hired guns of the Old West as it was being settled. Battle Of Fort Titus
The Battle of Fort Titus was a battle that occurred during conflicts in the Kansas Territory between abolitionist and pro-slavery militias prior to the American Civil War. The era is known as Bleeding Kansas. Background Fort Titus was built about April 1856 to be the fortress home of Henry T. Titus, a colonel in the militia of the Southern-oriented of the two governments of Kansas Territory. It was said Titus squatted on the claim of a free-state settler while he was away and built his cabin on this land. Fort Titus was a fortified log cabin with gun loopholes built into its walls to allow it to be defended from the inside. This fort had at least one window and it had a small log addition on the north side that served as a kitchen. In August 1856 Camp Sacket, a U.S. Army post, was about a mile away from Fort Titus. Twin Mound, Kansas
Twin Mound is a ghost town in western Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It was named for two natural mounds that rise gently from the landscape. History Henry Hiatt was born in Dublin, Indiana in 1816. In 1856, Hiatt, his wife and five children moved to Kansas Territory settling in Bloomington. Shortly after his arrival, Hiatt and two other men operated a saw mill but within a year Hiatt decided to move on and transported his family seven miles southwest. The two nearly identical mounds inspired Hiatt for he settled in the area and founded his own community, Twin Mounds. Hiatt gave no explanation as to why he left Bloomington but Hiatt resented the power of organized church in American society, preferred Confucius's version of the Golden Rule and possibly objected to the regulations the Bloomington Town Company was imposing on the residents. Lecompton (pronounced ) is a city in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 588. Lecompton was the ''de jure'' territorial capital of Kansas from 1855 to 1861, and the Douglas County seat from 1855 to 1858. Anti-slavery Lawrence became the ''de facto'' capital during the latter part of this period, when the county seat was moved there. This time period was known as Bleeding Kansas, due to the violence perpetrated by the pro-slavery, and to a lesser extent the anti-slavery, factions in the eastern part of the state.
