Climate Change Research Centre
The Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC) is a research initiative established in 2007 at the University of New South Wales. It is the lead node of the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes (CLEX), and formerly led the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science (ARCCSS) from 2011 to 2018. __NOTOC__ History The CCRC was established in 2007 at the University of New South Wales. The foundation directors of the CCRC were the Australian Research Council (ARC) Federation Fellow Professor Matthew England, who established the Climate and Environmental Dynamics Laboratory in 2005, and Professor Andrew Pitman, the director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. The Centre led the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science from 2011 until its 7-year funding ended on 30 June 2018. Australian Research Council
The Australian Research Council (ARC) is the primary non-medical research funding agency of the Australian Government, distributing more than in grants each year. The Council was established by the ''Australian Research Council Act 2001'', and provides competitive research funding to academics and researchers at Australian universities. Most health and medical research in Australia is funded by the more specialised National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), which operates under a separate budget. ARC does not directly fund researchers, but however allocates funds to individual schemes with specialised scopes, such as Discover (fundamental and empirical research) and Linkage (domestic and international collaborative projects). Most of these schemes fall under the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), whereby institutions must compete amongst each other for funding. Matthew England
Matthew England is a physical oceanographer and climate scientist. He is currently Scientia Professor of Ocean & Climate Dynamics at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Education In 1987 England completed a B.Sc. (Honours Class I and University Medal) at the University of Sydney, Australia, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 1992, holding a Fulbright Scholarship at Princeton University in 1990. Research and career After completing his PhD he took up a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, in Toulouse, France, from 1992-1994. England then returned to Australia to take up a research scientist position at CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, before moving to the University of New South Wales. Andrew Pitman
Andrew John Pitman is a British-Australian atmospheric scientist. He was born in Bristol in 1964 and educated at Liverpool University (B.Sc. Hons and Ph.D.). He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Leadership (Higher Education) from Macquarie University. In 2002 Pitman became a Professor at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, moving to University of New South Wales in 2007. He is currently the Director of the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. Prior to this, Pitman was the Director of the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science (2011 - 2017). He won the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographical Society's Priestly Medal for excellence in Atmospheric Science Research in 2004 and the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographical Medal in 2009. Katrin Meissner (scientist)
Katrin Juliane Meissner is a physical oceanographer and climate scientist known for climate models assessing the impact of abrupt climate change on terrestrial and marine biogeochemical cycling. Education and career Meissner grew up in Berlin, Germany, where she attended the Französisches Gymnasium Berlin. Meissner completed an engineering degree at the Ecole Centrale de Lille in 1995. Meissner moved to the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI, France where she investigated the predictability of the West African monsoon based on ocean-atmosphere fluxes off the coast of Senegal. Meissner received her Ph.D. at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research at the Universität Bremen, Germany in 1999. She developed an atmosphere model and a sea ice model and coupled both to an existing ocean model to study the long-term variability of the thermohaline circulation. A biophysical environment is a biotic and abiotic surrounding of an organism or population, and consequently includes the factors that have an influence in their survival, development, and evolution. A biophysical environment can vary in scale from microscopic to global in extent. It can also be subdivided according to its attributes.
