Clifton Forge Residential Historic District is a national historic district located at Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, Virginia. The district encompasses 728 contributing buildings and two contributing sites in a predominantly residential section of Clifton Forge. It primarily includes single-family frame vernacular dwellings dating to the turn-of-the 20th century. They are vernacular interpretations of a variety of popular architectural styles including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow. Notable non-residential buildings include the Clifton Forge High School (1928), First Baptist Church (c. 1892), Main Street Baptist Church (1921), First Christian Church (1906), Presbyterian Church (1907), Methodist Church (1908–1910), Clifton Forge Baptist Church (1912), Clifton Forge Woman's Club (1939), and Clifton Forge Armory (1940–1941). Clifton Forge, Virginia
Clifton Forge is a town in Alleghany County, Virginia, United States which is part of the greater Roanoke Region. The population was 3,555 at the 2020 census. The Jackson River flows through the town, which as a result was once known as Jackson's River Station. Clifton Forge was an independent city during the 2000 census. However, in 2001, Clifton Forge gave up its city status and reverted to a town. In previous decades, the railroad was a major employer. Clifton Forge is known for its mountain views and clear streams. Alleghany County, Virginia
Alleghany County is an American county located on the far western edge of Commonwealth of Virginia. It is bordered by the Allegheny Mountains, from which the county derives its name, and it is the northernmost part of the Roanoke Region. The county seat is Covington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 15,223. The county was created in 1822 from parts of Botetourt County, Bath County, and Monroe County (now in West Virginia). At the time, the majority of the population lived around Covington, and the primary cash crop then was hemp, which was used for rope production. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States. A bungalow is a small house or cottage that is either single-story or has a second story built into a sloping roof (usually with dormer windows), and may be surrounded by wide verandas. Jefferson School (Clifton Forge, Virginia)
Jefferson School, also known as East Elementary and Clifton Forge Elementary East, is a historic school building located at Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, Virginia. It was built in 1926, as a rectangular two-story building is clad in running-bond brick in the Colonial Revival style. It sits on a raised concrete foundation and has ribbons of small-paned double-hung windows and a recessed front entrance. A library and cafeteria were not added until 1937, when improvements also included water fountains, a public address system and projector. The town high school built for White Americans in 1928 had a cafeteria and libraries were required for schools by 1902. A two-story rectangular addition was built in 1952. 1952 improvements included more classrooms, an auditorium/gymnasium, an Industrial arts shop and an office for the principle.
