Clifford Cup
The Clifford Cup is the most prestigious club rugby knockout tournament in Sri Lanka, and arguably the oldest rugby tournament in Asia. The Clifford Cup commenced in 1911 and has been played continuously since 1950, having completed 79 seasons. The tournament began as a competition between the mercantile executives in Colombo and planters in the hill country. History 1911-1913 In 1911 Lady Elizabeth Clifford (the wife of the acting Governor of Ceylon, Sir Hugh Clifford) was interested in the annual rugby football fixture, Colombo versus Up Country, and expressed a wish that a match take place in Colombo on her birthday, 26 August, between teams representing the United Services and All Ceylon. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Sri Lanka. It is the rugby union team of the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club. In 2014 they won the Clifford Cup, for the first time, defeating Havelock Sports Club, 27–22 in the final. Navy SC also completed the 'Grand Double' by winning the Dialog Rugby League Championship with an undefeated season that same year. Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club are a Division 'A' rugby union team, based in Sri Lanka. It is the rugby union team of the Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club. In 1961 Air Force SC together with Division 'B' teams from Police SC, Army SC, Navy SC and University were permitted to play alongside the Division 'A' clubs, Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club, Colombo Hockey and Football Club, Havelock SC, Kandy SC, Dimbulla Athletic & Cricket Club, Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club, Uva and Kelani Valley Club in the Clifford Cup competition, which was changed whereby all thirteen clubs had to play each other once on a home-and-away basis in alternate years, and at the end of the season the best eight teams went on to play in a knock-out tournament for the Clifford Cup. It is the rugby union team of the Sri Lanka Army Sports Club and was founded in 1962. Sri Lanka Police Sports Club (Police SC) is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Sri Lanka, competing in the Dialog Rugby League. It is the rugby union team of the Sri Lanka Police Sports Club. Colombo Hockey And Football Club
Colombo Hockey and Football Club (also known as CH & FC) is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Colombo, Sri Lanka that competes in the Dialog Rugby League in Sri Lanka. History The Colombo Football Club was established in 1879, playing their first match against a 'World' Team on 30 June that year. The Colombo Hockey was established in 1892. In 1896 the Football and Hockey Clubs combined to form the Colombo Hockey and Football Club (CH & FC). The club was based at the Colombo Racecourse and catered to Hockey and Rugby (football) enthusiasts. In 1962 when the Army acquired the Grandstand and the racecourse CH & FC moved to their current home at Maitland Crescent. Kelani Valley Club
The Kelani Valley Club (''KV Club'') is one of the oldest planter's clubs in Sri Lanka. It is situated by the banks of the Seethawaka River at Avissawella, Sri Lanka. The club was established in 1884 by British planters in the region. The Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club (also known as DMCC) is a sporting club formed by British tea planters and founded in 1868. The club house and grounds are situated at the foothills of Darrawella Estate and therefore the club is often called the Darrawella Club. The first up country cricket match was played in 1868 against Dimbula Athletic & Cricket Club at their grounds in Radella Cricket Grounds, Radella, the ensuing matches becoming an annual fixture in the region. Dimbula Athletic & Cricket Club
The Dimbula Athletic and Cricket Club (also known as the Radella Club) is a sporting club formed by British tea planters and founded in 1856. It is the oldest sporting club in Sri Lanka outside of Colombo, with activities including rugby, cricket, squash, billiards, snooker, tennis and badminton. The club is most synonymous with rugby, as Dimbula A&CC was the only up country club to win the coveted Clifford Cup, in 1953 and again in 1959. This achievement wasn't matched until 1992 when the Kandy Sports Club were successful in winning the cup. The first up country cricket match was played in 1868 at the club's grounds in Radella against Dickoya, becoming an annual fixture in the region. In 1878 one of its members, Frank Hadow, a planter who was on Carlabeck Estate, won Wimbledon men's singles. Central Province Rugby Football Union
The Central Province Rugby Football Union (CPRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in Central Province, Sri Lanka. The CPRFU was established in 1992 and is conducted in accordance with the SLRFU guidelines and constitution. At its peak in 2002 the CPRFU included top clubs Kandy SC, Dimbula Athletic & Cricket Club, Dickoya Maskeliya CC, Peradeniya University, OTSC and Kandy Youth, all of whom have at one time or another competed in the SLRFU ‘A’ Division competition. The CPRFU also embarked in forming 'B' division clubs, which included Katugastota Rugby Football Club, Polgolla Rugby Football Club, Mawilmada Rugby Football Club, Matale Rugby Football Club, Nuwra Eliya Rugby Football Club and Pilimatalawa Rugby Football Club and by 2008 had 18 clubs playing in the up-country rugby league.
