Cliff Jumping
Cliff jumping is jumping off a cliff as a form of sport. When done without equipment, it may be also known as tombstoning. It forms part of the sport of coastal exploration or "coasteering". When performed with a parachute, it is known as BASE jumping. The world record for cliff jumping is currently held by Laso Schaller, with a jump of 58.8 m (193 ft). Tombstoning
Tombstoning (or cliff jumping) is the act of jumping in a straight, upright vertical posture into the sea or other body of water from a high jumping platform, such as a cliff, bridge or harbour edge. This posture of the body, resembling a tombstone, gives the activity its name. A safety advisory from the Government of the United Kingdom records that tombstoning has been taking place for "generations". In the United Kingdom between 2005 and 2015 there were 83 people injured and 20 people who died whilst tombstoning. Injuries and deaths It was reported that "Between June and August 007there were nine drowning or near misses as a result of people jumping from height into the water. Five were fatal, and impact injuries such as neck and spinal injuries were common in those who survived." In the UK between 2004 and 2008 there were 139 incidents of tombstoning where a rescue or emergency response was required. Coasteering
Coasteering is movement along the intertidal zone of a rocky coastline on foot or by swimming, without the aid of boats, surf boards or other craft. Coasteering allows a person to move in the “impact zone” between a body of water and the coast where waves, tides, wind, rocks, cliffs, gullies, and caves come together. The term was used by John Cleare as the combination of the words "mountaineering" and "coast" and was stolen by Andy Middleton in Wales in 1985, who then made it a business idea.
