Clewett's Building is a heritage-listed former warehouse at 250 Quay Street, Rockhampton, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built . It is also known as Capricorn Survey Consultants Pty Ltd, Herron Todd White Building, JM Headrick & Co., W G Thompson & Co., Lamberton & Co., RM Gow & Co., St Andrew's Hospital, and Herron Todd Valuers. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The former Clewett's building, built as a two-storeyed warehouse building, is thought to have been constructed for Felix Clewett (a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council) in the mid-1880s. Following its initial occupation by the Archer brothers at Gracemere after 1853, Rockhampton was proclaimed a town and declared a port of entry in 1858. William Thompson (Australian Politician)
William George Thompson (2 March 1863 – 7 March 1953) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was an Australian Senator. Early life William Thompson was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland, on 2 March 1863. When he was 14 months old, his family immigrated to Australia. Thompson was educated at North Rockhampton State School in Rockhampton in Queensland. At age 11, Thompson became an office boy for the merchant W. Jackson in Rockhampton. In 1881 he was the driving force to establish a branch of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society at North Rockhampton and in December 1881, initiated a second branch in Rockhampton. In 1886, he established his own business called W.G. Thompson & Co, operating a bonded warehouse and other commercial activities. Avonleigh is a heritage-listed house at 248 Quay Street, Rockhampton, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1885 by Robert Cousins and Walter Lawson. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Avonleigh was erected in late 1885 for Frederick Augustus Morgan who started mining with his brothers at Mount Morgan in 1882. The building was constructed by Robert Cousins and Walter Lawson and was one of three town-houses established in Quay Street offering a domestic contribution to the street which is dominated by substantial 19th century commercial buildings. It is part of the prestigious development which occurred in this period due to the wealth which Mount Morgan Gold brought to Rockhampton.
