Cleveland Film Festival
The Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) is an annual film festival based in Cleveland, Ohio. It is the largest film festival in Ohio. It was first held in 1977, showing eight films over a period of eight weeks at the Cedar Lee Theatre. It has since grown and in 2019 consisted of 213 feature films and 237 short films from 71 countries, and over 105,000 in attendance. 2022 will mark the 46th year for the CIFF. History The festival started in 1977 with eight films over eight weeks at the Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Cleveland Heights. In 1991, the festival relocated to Tower City Center, Tower City Cinemas in Downtown Cleveland, downtown Cleveland. Additional programming and events have also been held at other local venues, including the Capitol Theatre on Cleveland's west side, Shaker Cinemas on Buckeye-Shaker, Shaker Square, and the Cedar Lee Theatre. Flavio Pimenta Alves (born 30 November 1969) is a Brazilian writer, screenwriter, and film director resident in America since 1998. His movies consistently feature elderly characters as protagonists. He is best known for the film ''The Garden Left Behind'' starring Michael Madsen, Ed Asner and Carlie Guevara. Early years Alves was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and served the Brazilian navy for several years before coming to America in 1997. He was granted political asylum in the United States in 1998 based on political opinion and sexual orientation after he wrote the book, ''Toque de Silêncio'' ("Call to Silence", 1997), describing his life as a gay man in the Brazilian navy. ''Live and Become'' (french: Va, vis et deviens) is a 2005 French drama film about an Ethiopian Christian boy who disguises himself as an Ethiopian Jew to escape famine and emigrates to Israel. Louder Than A Bomb
Rooted & Radical Youth Poetry Festival (formerly named Louder Than a Bomb) is an annual youth poetry slam in Chicago every spring. Founded in 2001 by Kevin Coval and Anna West of the nonprofit organization Young Chicago Authors. It is now the largest youth slam in the world with over 1,000 teams competing in 2014. The goal of the slam is to get diverse youth from all around the Chicago area to not only share their stories, but listen to the voices of those from other parts of the city they would otherwise never hear. Participants range in age from middle school to college, with the majority in the high school age bracket. The competing high school slam teams present four individual poems and one group piece performed by four people. Each team competes in two preliminary bouts. Four teams compete each bout.
