Cleveland E. Dodge Jr.
Cleveland E. Dodge Jr. (March 7, 1922 – January 28, 2007) was an industrialist and businessman, and a pioneer of manufacturing temperature-resistant wire coatings using Teflon in the 1950s. He founded Dodge Fibers Corporation in 1955 to manufacture Teflon-coated fabrics. He later founded Dodge Machine Co., which manufactured Rope Grips and other products. Biography After his father's death in 1982, Dodge became president of the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation, established in 1917 by his grandfather Cleveland Hoadley Dodge. He developed an interest in the many New York City organizations which it helped fund. He served as director on boards including Phelps Dodge, Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, the YMCA of New York, Springfield College, Key Bank, the Bennington Museum and the Thousand Islands Antique Boat Museum. Teflon
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene that has numerous applications. It is one of the best-known and widely applied PFAS. The commonly known brand name of PTFE-based composition is Teflon by Chemours, a spin-off from DuPont, which originally discovered the compound in 1938. Polytetrafluoroethylene is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight polymer consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE, as fluorocarbons exhibit only small London dispersion forces due to the low electric polarizability of fluorine. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid. Polytetrafluoroethylene is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. Cleveland Hoadley Dodge
Cleveland Hoadley Dodge (January 26, 1860June 24, 1926) was an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He was active in New York City politics and was president of Phelps Dodge mining and served as "adviser and financier" to Woodrow Wilson. He was known for his charity work in World War I. Biography He was born on January 26, 1860, the son of Sarah Hoadley and William E. Dodge Jr., who was a principal partner in the firm of Phelps Dodge & Co. Their family homes were at 262 Madison Avenue, and Greyston, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. When the Dodge children were young, their playmates included members of the Roosevelt family, one of whom was Theodore Roosevelt. Phelps Dodge Corporation was an American mining company founded in 1834 as an import-export firm by Anson Greene Phelps and his two sons-in-law William Earle Dodge, Sr. and Daniel James. The latter two ran Phelps, James & Co., the part of the organization based in Liverpool, England. The import-export firm at first exported United States cotton from the Deep South to England and imported various metals to the US needed for industrialization. With the expansion of the Western frontier in North America, the corporation acquired mines and mining companies, including the Copper Queen Mine in Cochise County, Arizona and the Dawson, New Mexico coal mines.
