Cleve Lewis
Cleveland "Cleve" Lewis (born November 1, 1955) is an American retired professional soccer player who was the first African American drafted by the North American Soccer League. Career Lewis was born November 1, 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama. Raised in Willingboro Township, New Jersey, he attended John F. Kennedy High School, scoring more than 100 goals in his high school career and earning all-state honors as a senior. Lewis was an All-America selection at Brandeis University and captain of the 1976 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship winning team. He was named MVP of the championship final, scoring both goals, including the golden goal in double overtime. By the time he graduated he was the school's all-time leader in goals with 58. In January 1978 he was selected by the Soccer Bowl '77 champion, Cosmos in the first round of the NASL's 1978 college draft, but never played for them. Evelyn Lawler
Evelyn Lawler (born October 18, 1929) is a retired American track and field athlete. She competed for the United States in the 80 metres hurdles at the 1951 Pan American Games, finishing 6th. She is perhaps better known as the mother of (9 time) multiple Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis and Olympian, World Championship bronze medalist and sports announcer Carol Lewis. Lawler graduated from Tuskegee University. At one point in time she held the American record in the 80 metres hurdles. Lawler started in the sport as a sophomore in high school when her school picked 6 or 7 girls for a start up track team. Lawler was not selected but watched them practice. Cleveland Leigh "Cleve" Abbott (some sources say "Cleveland S. Abbott") (December 9, 1894 – April 14, 1955) was an American football player, coach and educator. He was the head coach of the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers football team from 1923 to 1954. Life Abbott was born in Yankton, South Dakota in 1894, one of seven children to Albert B. (aka Elbert) Abbott (1862 Abbeville, GA – 1952 Huron, SD) and Mollie Brown Abbott (1868–1909). Abbott graduated from high school (1908–1912) Watertown, South Dakota. He received his bachelor's degree (1912–1916) from South Dakota State College (SDSC) in Brookings, South Dakota.
