ClearRx
ClearRx is a trademark for a design for prescription drug packaging, designed by design student Deborah Adler as a Thesis, thesis project and adopted by Target Corporation (with refinements by Industrial design, industrial designer Klaus Rosburg) for use in their in-store pharmacies in 2005. The design is an attempt to clarify certain difficult aspects common to most prescription bottles used in the US. Background The Clear Rx bottle design was created to replace the classic orange pill bottle, which had existed since just after World War 2. The orange bottle label's information was misleading, since the text was very small and most of the time the company logo was the most emphasized text on the bottle. Plus, warnings and cautions were printed on inadequate color combinations, making it hard to read. Deborah Adler
Deborah Adler (born 1975) is an American designer. A native of Chappaqua, New York, Adler is the daughter of a doctor and a nurse. She attended the University of Vermont, receiving her BFA in 1997. Adler then studied design at the School of Visual Arts under Steven Heller and Lita Talarico. During this time, her grandmother became ill, having accidentally taken her husband's medication through inability to distinguish what was in the package. This led Adler to redesign prescription bottles as a thesis project. The resulting creation, ClearRx, was distributed nationally by Target Corporation in its stores, and was a success. An example of the ClearRx bottle is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Adler completed her MFA in 2002. Target Corporation (doing business as Target and stylized in all lowercase since 2018) is an American big box department store chain headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the seventh largest retailer in the United States, and a component of the S&P 500 Index. Target was established as the discount division of Dayton's department store of Minneapolis in 1962. Color Code
A color code is a system for displaying information by using different colors. The earliest examples of color codes in use are for long-distance communication by use of flags, as in semaphore communication. The United Kingdom adopted a color code scheme for such communication wherein red signified danger and white signified safety, with other colors having similar assignments of meaning. As chemistry and other technologies advanced, it became expedient to use coloration as a signal for telling apart things that would otherwise be confusingly similar, such as wiring in electrical and electronic devices, and pharmaceutical pills. The use of color codes has been extended to abstractions, such as the Homeland Security Advisory System color code in the United States. Hazard symbols or warning symbols are recognisable symbols designed to warn about hazardous or dangerous materials, locations, or objects, including electric currents, poisons, and radioactivity. The use of hazard symbols is often regulated by law and directed by standards organizations. Syringe
A syringe is a simple reciprocating pump consisting of a plunger (though in modern syringes, it is actually a piston) that fits tightly within a cylindrical tube called a barrel. The plunger can be linearly pulled and pushed along the inside of the tube, allowing the syringe to take in and expel liquid or gas through a discharge orifice at the front (open) end of the tube. The open end of the syringe may be fitted with a hypodermic needle, a nozzle or tubing to direct the flow into and out of the barrel. Industrial Designers Society Of America
The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is a membership-based not-for-profit organization that promotes the practice and education of industrial design. The organization was formally established in 1965 by the collaborative merger of the Industrial Designers Institute (IDI), the American Society of Industrial Designers (ASID), and the Industrial Designers Education Association (IDEA). However, its origins can be traced back to the 1920s, prior to the founding in 1938 of the American Design Institute (ADI), which was the predecessor of IDI.
