Clay Evans (swimmer)
Clayton T. Evans (born October 28, 1953) is a Canadian former competition swimmer and Olympic silver medalist. Evans represented Canada at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, Evans competed in the qualifying heats of the men's 100-metre backstroke and the men's 200-metre individual medley, but did not advance. After the 1972 Olympics, Evans attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he swam for the UCLA Bruins swimming team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Pacific-10 Conference competition from 1973 to 1976. As a Bruin swimmer, he won the Pac-10 individual championships in the 100-yard butterfly in 1973, 1974 and 1976. The 1980 Summer Olympics boycott was one part of a number of actions initiated by the United States to protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The Soviet Union, which hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and its allies later boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Background The Western governments first considered the idea of boycotting the Moscow 1980 Summer Olympics in response to the situation in Afghanistan at the 20 December 1979 meeting of NATO representatives. Gary MacDonald (swimmer)
Gary Wayne MacDonald (born December 15, 1953) is a freestyle swimmer from Canada, who won a silver medal in the men's 4×100-metre medley relay at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He did so alongside Graham Smith, Clay Evans, and Stephen Pickell. Gary was the Canadian record holder in the 50-metre freestyle as well. He also won two silver medals in relay events at the 1975 Pan American Games. MacDonald lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was the head coach of the Halifax Trojan Aquatic Club until his retirement in 2004; a position he had held for twenty two years. He was an assistant coach with the Dalhousie University Tigers varsity swim club for 11 years. In September 2015, he became the Acadia University head coach for the Axemen and Axewomen varsity swim team. The Gary MacDonald Park was recently opened in Mission, named after him. Graham Smith (Canadian Swimmer)
Donald Graham Smith (born May 9, 1958) is a Canadian former competition swimmer who won a silver medal in the men's 4x100-metre medley relay at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec. He did so alongside teammates Stephen Pickell, Clay Evans and Gary MacDonald. His brother George and sister Becky also competed in swimming. At the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, he became the first competitor to win six gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games; he won the 100- and 200-metre breaststroke, 200- and 400-metre individual medleys, and was part of the winning 4x100-metre freestyle and 4x100-metre medley relay teams. Smith twice broke the world record in the men's 200-metre individual medley (long course). He also won an NCAA national swimming championship at the University of California, Berkeley. Stephen Pickell
Stephen John Pickell (born August 11, 1957) is a Canadian retired competition swimmer. Swimming career Pickell won a silver medal in the men's 4x100-metre medley relay at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He did so alongside Graham Smith, Clay Evans and Gary MacDonald. Despite being Canadian he won the 1969 ASA National British Championships 100 metres backstroke title and the 200 metres backstroke title. Pacific-10 Conference
The Pac-12 Conference is a collegiate athletic conference, that operates in the Western United States, participating in 24 sports at the NCAA Division I level. Its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly Division I-A), the highest level of college football in the nation. The conference's 12 members are located in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. They include each state's flagship public university, four additional public universities, and two private research universities. The modern Pac-12 conference formed after the disbanding of the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), whose principal members founded the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) in 1959.
