Claudelands
Claudelands is a suburb directly to the east of central Hamilton, New Zealand, across the Waikato River. It is linked to the central city by the Claudelands road bridge and the East Coast Main Trunk Railway bridge. History Miropiko Pā, at River Road, in the north-west of Claudelands, was occupied by Ngāti Wairere, Ngāti Hānui and Ngāti Koura. Following the 1864 invasion of the Waikato they moved to Gordonton and the land was confiscated and sold by the government. Alfred William East, a captain with the 4th Waikato Regiment, was one of the original owners of Claudelands. East Street in the suburb is named for him. Francis Richard Claude was an early wealthy settler from South America who bought of parcels of mainly swampy land from the original soldier-settlers who were disgruntled with their land allocation. Claudelands Bridge
Claudelands Bridge is a dual-lane truss road bridge over the Waikato River, joining Claudelands with Hamilton Central. In 1968 it was converted from the old railway bridge, which had been completed about the end of July 1883. The road bridge was given a Category 2 listing in 1985. Around 11,000 vehicles a day use the bridge. The bridge is the second busiest CBD route for cyclists, with 135 in peak hours in 2009 and a rising trend. To make the bridge safer for the 600 cyclists a day, sharrows are being added to the lane markings in 2019. Buses to Rototuna and route 11 cross the bridge. A new railway bridge, opened on 19 September 1964, a few metres downstream, replaced the old with a 7-span, pre-stressed concrete box girder bridge. Claudelands Railway Station
Claudelands railway station was a New Zealand railway station in the Hamilton suburb of Claudelands. The station was between Brooklyn Road and Claudelands Road, east of the old Hamilton station (1879–1969) and west of Ruakura (1884–1967). History Claudelands had a railway station from 1884 to 1991, named Hamilton East until 1 March 1899, and then Kirikiriroa until 1 February 1914, when it was changed to Claudelands after a petition. The station was between Brooklyn Road and Claudelands Road. By 1884 the station had a goods shed and cattle pens. In 1912, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce applied for a porter to be employed there, which was approved in 1913, when it became a tablet station and the yard was extended, after a lengthy residents' campaign. Hamilton ( mi, Kirikiriroa) is an inland city in the North Island of New Zealand. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, it is the seat and most populous city of the Waikato region. With a territorial population of , it is the country's fourth most-populous city. Claudelands Rovers
Claudelands Rovers is a semi professional football club in New Zealand. It is based in the Hamilton suburb of Hamilton East. Claudelands Rovers Premier Men's Team plays in Division Two of the Lotto Northern League. The club also fields an U-23 Northern League team as a reserve grade side, and men's teams in several WAIBOP Football competitions. The club's women's team has previously won the Lotto Northern League Premier Women's competition, but in 2021 plays in the WAIBOP Football W-League competition. Claudelands Arena
Globox Arena (formerly Claudelands Arena) is a multi-purpose indoor sports and entertainment arena located in Hamilton, New Zealand. Globox Arena is part of Claudelands Events Centre which contains a 6000-capacity arena and four-star conference and exhibition centre. Construction began on Claudelands Events Centre in 2007 and was completed in 2011 at a cost of $68.4 million ($NZD). Globox Arena is a unique C-shaped auditorium, the only one of its kind in New Zealand and Australia, which is fully retractable and capable of holding live music and entertainment, international sporting events, large banquets, conferences and exhibitions. River Road, Hamilton
River Road is a residential suburb of Hamilton, sited on the eastern bank of the Waikato River. The namesake road runs from Claudelands Bridge north to Pukete Bridge and beyond, to Ngāruawāhia, but the main part of the suburb is between Boundary Road and Donny Park. Properties close to the river are much more expensive than those further away. Most of River Road was shown on an 1865 map, though it was some years later before it was built and, by 1866, only one bridge had been built. A walking path runs along the river bank, but it does not cover the entire length of the area. Hamilton Central Railway Station, Waikato
Hamilton Central was the name of a now-defunct railway station on the East Coast Main Trunk line which runs through the city of Hamilton in the Waikato region of New Zealand. The station was located in Hamilton's CBD and was made an underground station for the latter years of its existence before being closed. The underground platform still exists. For most of the time since a station opened on the site in 1879, it was named Hamilton. It had closed to regular passenger services when the present Hamilton station opened in 1975, so there was little need for formal renaming. There have been several proposals to reopen the station, often using the name 'Hamilton Central'. The East Coast Main Trunk line is still well used by freight trains. Hamilton Central is the central business district of Hamilton, New Zealand. It is located on the western banks of the Waikato River. Demographics Hamilton Central covers and had an estimated population of as of with a population density of people per km2. Hamilton North is also part of the Central Business District. Alfred William East
Alfred William East was a New Zealand politician. He represented the Omata electorate on the Taranaki Provincial Council from 5 November 1855 to 13 December 1856. He represented the Omata electorate in the 2nd New Zealand Parliament from 1855, but resigned in March 1860 at the outbreak of the First Taranaki War before the end of his term when he accepted a government appointment. He left Taranaki at that time. He did not serve in any subsequent Parliaments. In the resulting by-election, James Crowe Richmond was returned unopposed. He was later a captain with the 4th Waikato Regiment in Hamilton, New Zealand. He was one of the original owners of Claudelands, now one of the city's suburbs. East Coast Main Trunk Railway
The East Coast Main Trunk (ECMT) is a railway line in the North Island of New Zealand, originally running between Hamilton and Taneatua via Tauranga, connecting the Waikato with the Bay of Plenty. The ECMT now runs between Hamilton and Kawerau, with a branch line to Taneatua from the junction at Hawkens. The line is built to narrow gauge of , the uniform gauge in New Zealand. Te Rapa is a mixed light industrial, large-scale retail and semi-rural suburb to the northwest of central Hamilton, New Zealand that is built on a flat area that was previously the bed of an ancient river, the forerunner to the present Waikato River. Stretching in a long, thin north–south axis, Te Rapa is home to many factories including Te Rapa Dairy Factory, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Hamilton East, New Zealand
Hamilton East is a suburb in central Hamilton in New Zealand. The suburb's primary commercial and retail precinct is located along Grey Street. Hamilton East is characterised by villas and bungalows built early in the 20th century. History Hamilton East is one of Hamilton's oldest suburbs. From the 1870s until the mid-20th century, Hamilton East was sometimes known as 'Irishtown'. A significant number of the militiamen who settled there were of Irish descent, and many other Irish Catholics came to live near the Catholic Church and convent. The town of Hamilton East merged with Hamilton West in 1877. Many of the streets were named after famous figures of the New Zealand Wars, including Governor George Grey and Maori chief Te Awaitaia, who went by the name William Naylor/Wiremu Neera when he converted to Christianity.
