Classic Yacht Regatta
The Museum of Yachting was a not-for-profit organization in Newport, Rhode Island which worked to preserve the culture and heritage of yachting. The Museum was founded in 1979 by John Mecray and a small group of friends and was first housed at Fort Adams. In 2007, the International Yacht Restoration School acquired the museum and, in 2008, relocated its collection to the ''Edward W. Kane and James Gubelmann Library'' located in the restored ''John Mecray Aquidneck Mill Building''. The Museum was home to two permanent exhibits: ''The America’s Cup – The Newport Years'', and ''Coronet: The Long Life and Revival of an Historic American Schooner Yacht'', the story of '' Coronet''. It was also home to the American Sailboat Hall of Fame which honored sailboats built-in the United States and the ''Single-Handed Sailors' Hall of Fame'' which honored achievements of outstanding solo sailors throughout the world. Yachting
Yachting is the use of recreational boats and ships called ''yachts'' for racing or cruising. Yachts are distinguished from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose. "Yacht" derives from the Dutch word '' jacht'' ("hunt"). With sailboats, the activity is called sailing, and with motorboats, it is called powerboating. Racing History The history of sailing dates back to prehistoric times but the racing of sailing boats is believed to have started in the Netherlands some time in the 17th century. John Mecray
John Marcy Mecray (February 13, 1937 – November 1, 2017) was an American Realism (arts), realist painter best known for his marine art. Formative Years He was raised in Cape May, New Jersey where family roots pre-date the 19th century. John's namesake was a Civil War soldier killed in action at Williamsburg, Virginia on May 5, 1862, and memorialized by the Grand Army of the Republic, GAR with a ten-foot obelisk in the Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery, Lower Twp., New Jersey. John's grandfather, James E. Mecray, started one of the nation's first Ford Motor Company, Ford agencies in Cape May in 1903. He won a number of awards for his artwork in the Cape May public school system. Fort Adams
Fort Adams is a former United States Army post in Newport, Rhode Island that was established on July 4, 1799 as a First System coastal fortification, named for President John Adams who was in office at the time. Its first commander was Captain John Henry who was later instrumental in starting the War of 1812. The current Fort Adams was built 1824–57 under the Third System of coastal forts; it is part of Fort Adams State Park today. IYRS focuses on training highly skilled craftspeople and technicians for careers in a wide range of industries. ''Coronet'' is a 131' wooden-hull schooner yacht built for oil tycoon Rufus T. Bush in 1885. It is one of the oldest and largest vessels of its type in the world, and one of the last grand sailing yachts of the 19th century extant. American Sailboat Hall Of Fame
The American Sailboat Hall of Fame is a defunct hall of fame honoring 26 production sailboats built-in the United States. The hall of fame was established in 1994 by Sail America, a trade association for the U.S. sailing industry, to recognize ingenuity in designs by American boat builders. The last year of induction was 2004. Half-hull models of each Hall of Fame inductee was housed in a permanent exhibit at The Museum of Yachting located in Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island prior to the museum's dismantling after a 2007 acquisition by the IYRS School of Technology & Trades. The collection also traveled around the country each year to be displayed at the various Strictly Sail boat shows sponsored by Sail America, and at Sail Expo in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
