Clarrie Stevenson
Clarence Stevenson (1910–1984) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s. A forward for the Newtown club, he helped them win the 1933 NSWRFL Premiership. Background Stevenson was born in Sydney on 4 December 1910. Playing career A local junior, he played for Newtown in the 1930s. Stevenson played for City in the hooking role in 1933. He won a premiership with Newtown later that year when he played in the 1933 Grand Final. Stevenson played in the grand final as a replacement for Arthur Folwell, who had since departed on the 1933-34 Kangaroo tour. Stevenson retired after the conclusion of the 1935 NSWRFL season The 1935 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the twenty-eighth season of Sydney’s top-grade rugby league club competition, Australia’s first. Arthur Folwell
Arthur Fitzgerald Folwell (23 September 1904 – 14 October 1966) was a British-born Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, coached in the 1940s, and was an administrator in the mid-20th century. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative , he played his club football in the New South Wales Rugby Football League for Sydney's Newtown before becoming their coach and taking them to the 1943 NSWRFL premiership. Playing career In 1933 Folwell was selected for the Australian touring squad for the 1933-34 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain . He became Kangaroo No. 179 when played in the 2nd and 3rd Test matches and he played another 19 matches on the 1933-34 tour. Coaching career Folwell coached Newtown for three seasons during the Second World War (1942-1944). 1933 NSWRFL Season
The 1933 NSWRFL season was the twenty-sixth season of Sydney’s professional rugby league club competition, Australia’s first. Eight teams from across the city contested the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership during the season, which lasted from April until September, and culminated in Newtown’s victory over St. George in the final. Season summary When the Kangaroos sailed for England in July, the NSWRFL premiership, with a mere five rounds completed, was turned on its head. After losing the opening four matches of the season, last-placed Newtown won eleven of their next twelve matches to take the premiership, whilst Wests, who had won four and drawn one of six games, lost several key players and did not win another match.
