Clarence Petty
Clarence Adelbert Petty (August 8, 1905 – November 30, 2009) was an American Supervising Forest Ranger in the Adirondack Forest Preserve, a conservationist and an avid outdoorsman. He is best known for his advocacy supporting protection of the Adirondack Park. Petty graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1925, struggling with mathematics. In the same year, he matriculated into the forestry program at the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. Again struggling in college, he was given a job to teach the use of a transit theodolite and survey equipment, though, early on, he barely understood these instruments himself. Teaching others helped Petty develop both a better understanding of surveying and a better appreciation for social interactions. He graduated in June 1930. Adirondack Forest Preserve
New York's Forest Preserve, comprises almost all the lands owned by the state of New York within the Adirondack and Catskill parks. It is managed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). , the Forest Preserve covers nearly 3 million acres (), about 61% of all land managed by DEC. Around 2.7 million acres () are in the Adirondacks while are in the Catskills. Article XIV of the state constitution requires the Forest Preserve to be kept "forever wild", thus providing the highest degree of protection of wild lands in any state. A constitutional amendment would be required to transfer any of this land to another owner or lessee.
