Clappers is/was a New York-based reggae label that was formed by Lister Hewan-Lowe in 1980. Yabby You
Vivian Jackson (14 August 1946 – 12 January 2010), better known as Yabby You (or sometimes Yabby U), was a reggae vocalist and producer, who came to prominence in the early 1970s through his uncompromising, self-produced work. Biography Jackson was born in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica in 1946. One of seven children, Jackson left home at the age of twelve to find work at a furnace in Waterhouse. Jack Ruby (record Producer)
Lawrence Lindo (died April 1989), better known as Jack Ruby, was a Jamaican record producer and sound system operator, best known for his 1970s productions of artists such as Burning Spear. Ruby was based in Ocho Rios and during his time was the only major Jamaican record producer not headquartered in Kingston. "How We Gonna Make the Black Nation Rise?" is a 1980 hip hop song by Brother D with Collective Effort. Released on the independent label Clappers, it is considered the first political hip hop song. Like the content of the song, the label Clappers Records was developed by Lister Hewan-Lowe who wanted to create a label to release politically motivated music. While working for Island Records, he reached out to reggae musicians involved in the hip hop music world in New York City to find someone who wanted to record a political record. He met with Daryl Aamaa Nubyahn, who wrote lyrics for the song and agreed to meet with him at A&R Studios to record it. On meeting at the studio, Nubyahn had invited several people to record the verses with him who were known as Collective Effort.
