Clapham High Street
Clapham High Street is the main through road and shopping area in Clapham, South London, England, in the London Borough of Lambeth. History On Clapham Common, not far from the western end of the High Street, is Holy Trinity Church, which was associated with the Clapham Sect in the early nineteenth century. The Clapham Sect, whose members included William Wilberforce, helped campaign for the abolition of the slave trade and was instrumental in the introduction of the Slave Trade Act 1807. Transport The High Street is well served by public transport: Clapham Common and Clapham North tube stations on the London Underground's Northern line are, respectively, at the southern and northern ends of the High Street, with Clapham High Street railway station on the South London Line, part of the London Overground with limited national rail services also serving the station, also at the northern end, close to Clapham North. Clapham High Street - Geograph
Clapham () is a suburb in south west London, England, lying mostly within the London Borough of Lambeth, but with some areas (most notably Clapham Common) extending into the neighbouring London Borough of Wandsworth. History Early history The present day Clapham High Street is on the route of a Roman road. The road is recorded on a Roman monumental stone found nearby. According to its inscription, the stone was erected by a man named Vitus Ticinius Ascanius. It is estimated to date from the 1st century. (The stone was discovered during building works at Clapham Common South Side in 1912. It is now placed by the entrance of the former Clapham Library, in the Old Town.) According to the history of the Clapham family, maintained by the College of Heralds, in 965 King Edgar of England gave a grant of land at Clapham to Jonas, son of the Duke of Lorraine, and Jonas was thenceforth known as Jonas "de fClapham". South London Line
The South London line is a railway line in inner south London, England. The initial passenger service on the route was established by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway on 1 May 1867 when the central London terminal stations of Victoria and London Bridge were connecting to the inner south London suburbs of Clapham, Brixton, Camberwell and Peckham. Since 2012 passenger services have been part of London Overground and run between and continuing toward via the East London line. The line is long and consists of seven stations, one of which marks the crossover into the East London line network. A3 Road (Great Britain)
The A3, known as the Portsmouth Road or London Road in sections, is a major road connecting the City of London and Portsmouth passing close to Kingston upon Thames, Guildford, Haslemere and Petersfield. For much of its length, it is classified as a trunk road and therefore managed by National Highways. Almost all of the road has been built to dual carriageway standards or wider. Apart from bypass sections in London, the road travels in a southwest direction and, after Liss, south-southwest. London Buses Route 137
London Buses route 137 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Streatham Hill and Marble Arch, it is operated by Arriva London. History In the 1930s, STL buses were used on this route which ran from Highgate to Elmers End. The AEC Routemaster buses which operated route 137 since 1 November 1964 were replaced by one-person operated Wright Pulsar Gemini bodied DAF DB250s on 10 July 2004, ending a remarkable forty years of service New Routemasters were introduced on 6 December 2014. The rear platform remains closed at all times except for when the bus is at bus stops. On 15 July 2017 route 137 was permanently curtailed to Marble Arch and no longer serves Oxford Street. London Buses route 88 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Parliament Hill Fields and Clapham Common, it is operated by London General. The route used to be known as "the Clapham Omnibus" when it was run by London General with single-decker buses. History Route 88 was the first "Metropolitan" route to receive AEC NS-type buses, running between Acton Green, London, Acton Green and Mitcham.
