Clannad (album)
''Clannad'' is the debut album by Irish folk group Clannad. It was released in 1973 by Philips Ireland. It was reissued in 1982 under the name ''The Pretty Maid''. In 1997, it was released on CD for the first time by Royal Records International again under the name ''Clannad'', with a bonus track from 1975. The album features songs in both Irish Gaelic and English, including a cover version of Bonnie Dobson's " Morning Dew", as well as many traditional Irish songs. Clannad (musical Group)
Clannad () is an Irish band formed in 1970 in Gweedore, County Donegal by siblings Ciarán, Pól Brennan, Pól, and Moya Brennan and their twin uncles The Duggans, Noel and Pádraig Duggan. They have adopted various musical styles throughout their history, including folk music, folk, folk rock, Traditional Irish music, traditional Irish, Celtic music, Celtic and new-age music, often incorporating elements of smooth jazz and Gregorian chant. Initially known as ''Clann as Dobhar'', they shortened their name to Clannad in 1973 after winning the Letterkenny, Letterkenny Folk Festival with the song "Liza". By 1979, they had released three albums and completed a successful US tour. From 1980 to 1982, they operated as a six-piece with their sister/niece Enya Brennan on additional keyboards and vocals, before she left the group to pursue a solo career. Timothy Alan Patrick Rose (September 23, 1940 – September 24, 2002) (unofficial website by long-term correspondent of Rose's) was an American singer and songwriter who spent much of his life in London, England, and had more success in Europe than in his native country. Biography Early years Rose was born in Washington, D.C., and raised by his mother Mary, who worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, his aunt, and his grandmother in an area known as South Fairlington Historic District, in Arlington, Virginia, where he was to meet Scott McKenzie, who lived nearby. Rose learned to play the banjo and guitar, and won the top music award in high school. Rose graduated from Gonzaga College Prep School, a noted Jesuit institution in DC, class of 1958. Turlough O'Carolan
Turlough O'Carolan ( ga, Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin ; 167025 March 1738) was a blind Celtic harper, composer and singer in Ireland whose great fame is due to his gift for melodic composition. Although not a composer in the classical sense, Carolan is considered by many to be Ireland's national composer. Harpers in the old Irish tradition were still living as late as 1792, and ten, including Arthur O'Neill (harpist), Arthur O'Neill, Patrick Quin and Donnchadh Ó Hámsaigh, Donnchadh Ó hÁmsaigh, attended the Belfast Harp Festival. Ó Hámsaigh did play some of Carolan's music but disliked it for being too modern. Some of Carolan's own compositions show influences of the style of continental classical music, whereas others such as Carolan's ''Farewell to Music'' reflect a much older style of "Gaelic Harping". Pól Brennan
Pól Brennan ( ga, Pól Ó Braonáin, ; born 22 April 1956) is an Irish singer, songwriter and producer. He is the brother of Enya, Moya Brennan, Brídín Brennan and Ciarán Brennan. He is a member of the family band Clannad, and co-wrote the hit song "Theme from Harry's Game". He left the group in 1990, but rejoined in 2011. Since the early 1990s, Pól has gained critical acclaim as a solo artist when he joined Japanese musician Joji Hirota and Chinese musician Guo Yue, and released an album, ''Trísan''. The music on this album is a mixture of Celtic and Japanese musical styles. More recently, Pól wrote the soundtrack of the movie ''When the Sky Falls'' (1999) and performed at the 2001 Carnvaha festival in Wexford, Ireland. He also produced music for the 2018 film ''Penance''. He has toured extensively all over the world and is also joined by many popular artists. Padraig Duggan
The Duggans ( ga, Na Dúgáiní) were an Irish musical duo from Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland. The twin brothers Noel Duggan and Pádraig Duggan ( ga, Ó Dúgáin) came to prominence in the 1970s with the folk group Clannad, and took a ten-year break after winning a Grammy Award for their 1998 album ''Landmarks''. They later toured extensively with their band Norland Wind. They were identified and introduced to television by Tony MacMahon, and in 2005 released their first studio album ''Rubicon'', which featured Moya Brennan, Finbar Furey and Órla Fallon among others. It was met with critical acclaim and sold well throughout Ireland. Pádraig Duggan died in 2016 and Noel Duggan died in 2022. Morning Dew
"Morning Dew," also known as "(Walk Me Out in the) Morning Dew," is a contemporary folk song by Canadian singer-songwriter Bonnie Dobson. The lyrics relate a fictional conversation in a post-nuclear holocaust world. Originally recorded live as a solo performance, Dobson's vocal is accompanied by her finger-picked acoustic guitar playing. In 1962, "Morning Dew" was included on the live ''Bonnie Dobson at Folk City'' album. Subsequently, the song was recorded by other contemporary folk and rock musicians, including the Grateful Dead, who adapted it using an electric rock-ensemble arrangement for their debut album. Background and lyrics The song is a dialogue between the last man and woman left alive following an apocalyptic catastrophe.
