Clancy In Wall Street
''Clancy in Wall Street'' is a 1930 American pre-Code comedy film. It stars Charles Murray, who had made a number of films for Edward Small. It was also known as ''Clancy Caught Short'' and was described as the first comedy about the stock market crash. It was the last film for director Ted Wilde, who had died in December of the previous year. Plot Plumber Michael Clancy, fixing up some pipe on the stock exchange, accidentally buys some stock and makes a quick $200 on a 20 percent margin. He wants to continue but his partner, Andy MacIntosh, refuses to get involved. Clancy makes a fortune, leaves his business, and crashes high society, ignoring his old friend, and urging his daughter, Katie, to reject MacIntosh's son in favor of Freddie Saunders. Then the stock market crashes. Ted Wilde
Ted Wilde (December 16, 1889 – December 17, 1929) was a comedy writer and director during the era of silent movies, though he also directed two talkies released in 1930. He was born in New York City. His initial career was as a member of Harold Lloyd's writing staff. His final film as a director was ''Clancy in Wall Street''. He died of a stroke in Hollywood at the age of 40, and was interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California. Awards He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director of a Comedy Picture, but did not win, in the 1st Academy Awards for the film ''Speedy''. Edward Small
Edward Small (born Edward Schmalheiser, February 1, 1891, Brooklyn, New York – January 25, 1977, Los Angeles) was a film producer from the late 1920s through 1970, who was enormously prolific over a 50-year career. He is best known for the movies '' The Count of Monte Cristo'' (1934), '' The Man in the Iron Mask'' (1939), ''The Corsican Brothers'' (1941), '' Brewster's Millions'' (1945), '' Raw Deal'' (1948), ''Black Magic (1949)'', ''Witness for the Prosecution'' (1957) and '' Solomon and Sheba'' (1959). Early life and career Small was born on February 1, 1891 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, the son of Rose (née Lewin) and Philip Schmalheiser. Pre-Code Hollywood was the brief era in the American film industry between the widespread adoption of sound in film in 1929LaSalle (2002), p. 1. and the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code censorship guidelines, popularly known as the "Hays Code", in mid-1934. Although the Code was adopted in 1930, oversight was poor, and it did not become rigorously enforced until July 1, 1934, with the establishment of the Production Code Administration (PCA). Charles Murray (American Actor)
Charles Albert Murray (June 22, 1872 – July 29, 1941), was an American film actor of the silent era. Murray was born in Laurel, Indiana, on June 22, 1872, to Isaac Murray and Martha Ellen "Mollie" Murray (née Sullenburger). Murray was a comedian in vaudeville and on stage for 20 years, forming the Murray and Mack team, before he began acting in films. His first work in films was for Biograph. His work in films included appearing in The Cohens and Kellys series with George Sidney. He appeared in more than 280 films between 1912 and 1938, starting with film shorts. He also directed five films. Murray was married to Nellie Bae Hamilton. He died in Los Angeles, California, from pneumonia. For his contribution to motion pictures, decades after his death, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1725 Vine Street. Lucien Littlefield (August 16, 1895 – June 4, 1960) was an American actor who achieved a long career from silent films to the television era. He was noted for his versatility, playing a wide range of roles and already portraying old men before he was of voting age. Life and career Lucien Littlefield was born in San Antonio, Texas and attended Staunton Military Academy. He started his movie career in 1913 and worked as an actor until his death in 1960. He usually portrayed comedic supporting characters, often much older than himself. His role of the doctor in '' The Cat and the Canary'' (1927) is one of his more notable performances. Edward James Nugent (February 7, 1904 – January 3, 1995) was an American film and stage actor. Biography Born in 1904 in New York City, Nugent appeared in more than 80 films between 1928 and 1937. Miriam Seegar Whelan (September 1, 1907 – January 2, 2011) was an American actress in silent film and early sound films. Early life As the Seegar sisters started acting and singing, Frank Seegar left teaching to open a hardware store in efforts to support his daughters' growing singing and acting pursuits. Miriam Seegar made her film debut in 1928 in '' The Price of Divorce'', in which she starred alongside Frances Day and Rex Maurice. The film never was released, but was adapted for sound and released two years later as '' Such Is the Law''. She followed that with a lead role in '' The Valley of Ghosts'' the same year.
