Claire G. Cardwell is a judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. Early life and education Cardwell earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and later attended the University of Richmond School of Law, receiving a Juris Doctor. Career Cardwell began her career as a lawyer in 1984. In 1989, Cardwell opened a private practice that focused on criminal defense and civil litigation and also began working as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond. In 1994, Cardwell became Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney in Richmond, Virginia. Brenda Spry is a judge for the Third Circuit of Virginia. She previously served as the chief public defender for the Portsmouth, Virginia office of the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission. Early life and education Spry attended Old Dominion University, receiving a degree in criminal justice. She then attended William & Mary Law School, receiving a Juris Doctor. The Virginia Circuit Courts are the state trial courts of general jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Circuit Courts have jurisdiction to hear civil and criminal cases. For civil cases, the courts have authority to try cases with an amount in controversy of more than $4,500 and have exclusive original jurisdiction over claims for more than $25,000. In criminal matters, the Circuit Courts are the trial courts for all felony charges and for misdemeanors originally charged there. Louise Lucas
Lillie Louise Lucas ( Boone; born January 22, 1944) is an American politician serving as a Virginia state senator, representing the 18th District in the southeast of the state since 1992. Democrats won a majority of seats in the 2019 Virginia Senate election, so Lucas succeeded Republican Stephen Newman as the Virginia Senate's President pro tempore.
