Claire Dinsmore
Claire Allan Dinsmore (born 1961) is an American jeweller, designer and new media artist. Dinsmore was born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1961. She began her artistic career as a jewellery artist, moving later to net art and hypertext. Her work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Claire Dinsmore founded and published Cauldron & Net, a collection of electronic literature, from 1997 to 2002. These files are now being served on the NeXt, an online digital repository and museum sponsored by the University of Washington. New media describes communication technologies that enable or enhance interaction between users as well as interaction between users and content. In the middle of the 1990s, the phrase "new media" became widely used as part of a sales pitch for the influx of interactive CD-ROMs for entertainment and education. Electronic literature or digital literature is a genre of literature encompassing works created exclusively on and for digital devices, such as computers, tablets, and mobile phones. A work of electronic literature can be defined as "a construction whose literary aesthetics emerge from computation", "work that could only exist in the space for which it was developed/written/coded—the digital space". This means that these writings cannot be easily printed, or cannot be printed at all, because elements crucial to the text are unable to be carried over onto a printed version.
