Civilian Warfare Gallery
Civilian Warfare Gallery was an art gallery located in New York City's East Village in the early 1980's and was one of the founding galleries of the East Village art movement. David Wojnarowicz
David Michael Wojnarowicz ( (September 14, 1954 – July 22, 1992) was an American painter, photographer, writer, filmmaker, performance artist, songwriter/recording artist, and AIDS activist prominent in the East Village art scene. He incorporated personal narratives influenced by his struggle with AIDS as well as his political activism in his art until his death from the disease in 1992. Biography Wojnarowicz was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, where he and his two siblings and sometimes their mother were physically abused by their father, Ed Wojnarowicz. Ed, a Polish-American merchant marine from Detroit, had met and married Dolores McGuinness in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 when he was 26 and she was 16. Richard Hambleton
Richard Art Hambleton (June 23, 1952 – October 29, 2017) was a Canadian artist known for his work as a street artist A street artist is a person who makes art in public places. Luis Frangella
Luis Frangella (July 6, 1944 – December 7, 1990) was an Argentinian figurative post-modern painter and sculptor associated with the expressionist painting of the Lower East Side of New York City in the 1980s. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1982. He died of AIDS in 1990. Education Frangella studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). As an undergraduate student, he obtained a scholarship at the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) to work in Switzerland in urban and regional design. Once there, he was hired by R. Von Senger to work at the villa of musician Herbert von Karajan, in St. Moritz. He travelled through Europe in research journeys to learn more about the work of Max Bill, Le Corbusier, and Alvar Aalto. Greer Lankton
Greer Lankton (April 21, 1958 – November 18, 1996), was an American artist known for creating lifelike sewn dolls that were often modeled on friends or celebrities and posed in elaborate theatrical settings. She was a key figure in the East Village art scene of the 1980s in New York. Early life Greer Lankton was born in Flint, Michigan, to a Presbyterian minister and his wife. It was during her rough childhood as a "feminine boy" that she began creating dolls. "It was when I was about ten years old ... I used to make dolls out of hollyhocks and all types of flowers. Grey Organisation
The Grey Organisation (GO) was an artist collective active from 1983 to 1991. GO worked in several media including film and video and participated in over 20 international exhibitions. In January 1985 the group committed an act of 'art terrorism' by smuggling one of its paintings into the International Contemporary Arts Fair in London. The following year it mounted an attack on Cork Street, then the centre of the London art world, splashing grey paint on the windows of a number of galleries. After this, members of the group were arrested and for a time banned from central London. This resulted in them relocating to New York City where they exhibited at The Civilian Warfare Gallery in the East Village. The members of the group were Toby Mott, Daniel Saccoccio, Tim Burke and Paul Spencer. Toby Mott
Toby Victor Mott (born 12 January 1964) is a British artist, designer, and sometime Punk historian known for his work with the Grey Organisation, an artists' collective that was active in the 1980s, and for his fashion brand Toby Pimlico. More recently he has become known for his Mott Collection, an archive of UK punk rock and political ephemera that includes over 1,000 posters, flyers, and fanzines. Early life Toby Mott was born in London, son of academic Jim Mott and social worker Pam. He received a scholarship to attend the progressive, independent St. Mary's Town and Country School. At some point, the scholarship was withdrawn, and he went on to complete his schooling at Pimlico Comprehensive, where he shared a classroom with the screenwriter Amy Jenkins and Patrick Harrington, an infamous leading member of the National Front. Jane Bauman
Jane Bauman is an American painter, sculptor, and academic. She has been a professor and Chair of the Visual and Performing Art Department at Coastline Community College in Newport Beach, California. As a working artist, she is very active in the Southern California art scene. Early life and education Bauman was born in Burbank, California and grew up in Los Angeles where surf culture, the 60’s hippie movement, psychedelic music and the Hollywood movie industry had a formative influence on her artistic development. Career Bauman received her Bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University in 1973. She then enrolled at San Francisco Art Institute and earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1980.
