Civil aviation in India, the world's third-largest civil aviation market as of 2020, traces its origin back to 1911, when the first commercial civil aviation flight took off from a polo ground in Allahabad carrying mail across the Yamuna river to Naini. Air India is India's national flag carrier after merging with Indian (airline), Indian Airlines in 2007 and plays a major role in connecting India with the rest of the world. IndiGo, Air India, Spicejet, Go First and Vistara, AirAsia India are the major carriers in order of their market share. These airlines connect more than 80 cities across India and also operate overseas routes after the liberalisation of Indian aviation. Damania Airways was an Indian airline headquartered in Mumbai, that operated from 1993 to 1997. It was founded by the brothers, Parvez and Vispi Damania. Parvez later played a vital role in Sahara India Pariwar in their venture Air Sahara and then went on to become the Executive Director of Kingfisher Airlines. ModiLuft was a private airline based in Delhi, India. It operated on domestic routes until it shut down in 1996. It maintained high standards in flight safety, ground maintenance and on-time performance owing to support from Lufthansa AG. ModiLuft's aircraft were configured in First, Business and Economy Class, making it the only private airline in India during its time to fly a three class configuration on domestic routes. It used Boeing 737-200 aircraft leased from Lufthansa and had an incident free track record of flying. Air India Flight 182 was an Air India flight operating on the Montreal–London–Delhi–Bombay route. On 23 June 1985, it was operated using Boeing 747-237B registered ''VT-EFO''. It disintegrated in mid-air en route from Montreal to London, at an altitude of over the Atlantic Ocean, as a result of an explosion from a bomb planted by Canadian Sikh terrorists. Kalinga Airlines was a private airline based in Calcutta, India. It was founded in 1947 by aviator and politician Biju Patnaik, who was also the airline's chief pilot.
