Civil Service Live
Civil Service Live is a series of events in the United Kingdom designed to share best practice, promote innovation and drive collaboration across all government departments and agencies across the Civil Service. Overview It was launched by the Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell and Kevin Sorkin at Civil Service World in April 2008. The national event has featured high-profile speakers (including Peter Jones from Dragons Den), workshops, an innovation space, a civil service history museum and other exciting content. In addition to the national event in London, Civil Service Live stages a number of regional events across the country, the first of these was Gateshead in 2009 and events have also taken place in Manchester and Belfast. The Cabinet Secretary is the most senior civil servant in the United Kingdom, and is based in the Cabinet Office. The person in this role acts as the senior policy adviser to the Prime Minister and Cabinet and as the Secretary to the Cabinet, is responsible to all ministers for the efficient running of government. The role is currently occupied by Simon Case. Origin The position of Cabinet Secretary was created in 1916 for Sir Maurice Hankey, when the existing secretariat of the Committee of Imperial Defence, headed by Hankey, became secretariat to a newly organised War Cabinet. Gus O'Donnell
Augustine Thomas O'Donnell, Baron O'Donnell, (born 1 October 1952) is a former British senior civil servant and economist, who between 2005 and 2011 (under three Prime Ministers) served as the Cabinet Secretary, the highest official in the British Civil Service. O'Donnell announced after the 2010 General Election that he would step down within that Parliament and did so at the end of 2011. His post was then split into three positions: he was succeeded as Cabinet Secretary by Sir Jeremy Heywood, as Head of the Home Civil Service by Sir Bob Kerslake (in a part-time role), and as Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office by Ian Watmore. Whilst Cabinet Secretary, O'Donnell was regularly referred to within the Civil Service, and subsequently in the popular press, as ''GOD''; this was mainly because of his initials. ''Dragons' Den'' is a reality television program format in which entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel of venture capitalists in the hope of securing investment finance from them. A deputy prime minister or vice prime minister is, in some countries, a government minister who can take the position of acting prime minister when the prime minister is temporarily absent.
