Civil Parishes In Tyne And Wear
A civil parish is a country subdivision, forming the lowest unit of local government in England. There are 10 civil parishes in the ceremonial county of Tyne and Wear, most of the county being unparished; North Tyneside and South Tyneside are completely unparished. It is the County of England with the least count of civil parishes. At the 2001 census, there were 41,044 people living in the 10 parishes, accounting for 3.8 per cent of the county's population. Local Government And Rating Act 1997
The Local Government and Rating Act 1997 (c. 29) allows a community at the village, neighbourhood, town or similar level beneath a district or borough council to demand its own elected parish or town council. This right only applies to communities within England and outside of Greater London. The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 would later extend the parish petition right to places within Greater London. Section 11 of the Act allows any such community to collect a petition for a new parish or town council and also to define the area that it shall cover. Once the petition meets a certain threshold of registered electors’ signatures, the local metropolitan borough council, district council or unitary authority cannot stop it. Tyne And Wear County
Tyne and Wear () is a metropolitan county in North East England, situated around the mouths of the rivers River Tyne, Tyne and River Wear, Wear. It was created in 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972, along with five metropolitan boroughs of Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, City of Sunderland, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. It is bordered by Northumberland to the north and County Durham, Durham to the south; the county boundary was formerly split between these counties with the border as the River Tyne. The former Tyne and Wear County Council, county council was based at Sandyford House. There is no longer county level local governance following the Tyne and Wear County Council, county council disbanding in 1986, by the Local Government Act 1985, with the metropolitan boroughs functioning separately.
