Citybus Route 1
Citybus Route 1 is a bus route operated by Citybus (CTB) on Hong Kong Island, running between Felix Villas and Happy Valley (Upper) via Kennedy Town, Sheung Wan, Central and Wan Chai. It is one of the oldest existing bus routes in Hong Kong, having been in continuous operation ever since 1928 (except for a short break during the Japanese occupation). History The route was started on 5 November 1928 by Hong Kong Tramways, between Sai Wan and Happy Valley. At that time, it had no route number. Just several days after the inauguration of service, the western terminus was changed to Sheung Wan near Wing Lok Pier, in response to requests from the police. On 11 June 1933 China Motor Bus gained the franchise of Hong Kong Island bus services, and the route was given the number "1". Kennedy Town
Kennedy Town is at the western end of Sai Wan on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. It was named after Arthur Edward Kennedy, the 7th Governor of Hong Kong from 1872 to 1877. Administratively, it is part of Central and Western District. Due to its distance from major commercial cores and longtime inaccessibility by train, town development was less vigorous than in other parts of urban Hong Kong. But since the MTR was extended to the area in 2014, it is rapidly gentrifying, with many older businesses, such as vehicle repair workshops and cha chaan tengs, making way for new luxury developments, as well as high-end bars and restaurants. Sai Wan
Sai Wan, also known as Western district, or simply Western, is an area in Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong that corresponds to Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui, Belcher Bay and Kennedy Town. The Central (Macau Ferry) Bus Terminus () is a major bus terminus located in Sheung Wan, Central and Western District, Hong Kong, next to the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal. It is one of the largest open-air bus terminus in Hong Kong and is home to a large variety of cross-harbour tunnel bus routes towards points in Kowloon and the New Territories, making the terminus one of the most important transport interchanges in Hong Kong. Broom Road
A broom (also known in some forms as a broomstick) is a cleaning tool consisting of usually stiff fibers (often made of materials such as plastic, hair, or corn husks) attached to, and roughly parallel to, a cylindrical handle, the broomstick. Cleverly Street
Sheung Wan is an area in Hong Kong, located in the north-west of Hong Kong Island, between Central and Sai Ying Pun. Administratively, it is part of the Central and Western District. The name can be variously interpreted as ''Upper District'' (occupying relatively high ground compared to Central and Wan Chai), or ''Gateway District'' (perhaps a reference to the location where the British first entered and occupied Hong Kong). History Sheung Wan was one of the earliest settled places by the British, and belonged to the historical Victoria City. The site of the original occupation of Hong Kong Island by British forces in 1842 was at Possession Street, between Queen's Road Central and Hollywood Road. Central Ferry Piers
The Central Ferry Piers (Chinese: 中環碼頭) are situated on the northeast part of Central, Hong Kong Island. The ferries mostly depart to Outlying Islands in the New Territories, with the exception of Pier 1 serving as a government pier, and ferries from piers 7 and 8 going to Kowloon. History The current piers were all built in the 1990s and early 2000s due to the Airport Core Programme, under which the Central Reclamation was built to provide land for Hong Kong station, the terminus of the new airport railway. Route 5 was a bus route on Hong Kong Island operated by Citybus (Hong Kong), between Felix Villas (Mount Davis) (摩星嶺) and Causeway Bay (Whitfield Road) (銅鑼灣威非路道). Timeline * 1928: started by Hong Kong Hotel between Causeway Bay and Shek Tong Tsui. * 11 June 1933: taken over by China Motor Bus as part of the Hong Kong Island bus franchise, and given the number 5. Central Market, Hong Kong
Central Market was a fresh food market in Central, Hong Kong and the first wet market in the city. It is one of only two existing Bauhaus market buildings in Hong Kong, the other one being Wan Chai Market. After years of disuse, it was reopened to the public on Aug 23, 2021 as a new centre for retailers, eateries and public areas. This was after a major renovation led by the Urban Renewal Authority, which retained some original architectural structures, such as some market stalls and its iconic stairwell. Tai Hang () is an area southeast of Causeway Bay located in the mid-north of Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. It is home to many luxurious private apartments. Residents are predominantly more affluent Hong Kong locals and expatriate professionals. Geography Tai Hang is a valley with an opening to Causeway Bay in north and So Kon Po in west. To its south and east are hills. The former coastline is marked by Tung Lo Wan Road and the main road Tai Hang Road winds in the hills throughout the area. Sai Ying Pun
Sai Ying Pun is an area in Western District, on Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong. It is administratively part of the Central and Western District. Etymology In Cantonese, ''Sai'' () means "west" and ''Ying Pun'' () means "camp", especially a military camp. It was where the early British military stayed. Location Sai Ying Pun is built on the steeply sloping lower slopes of Victoria Peak and also on the western reclamation. The areas of Shek Tong Tsui and Kennedy Town are located to the west, Sheung Wan and Tai Ping Shan are to the east, and the Mid-Levels is higher up the hill to the south. United Pier () (1933–1994) was a ferry pier in Central, Hong Kong. It was located at Jubilee Street, so it was formerly named "Jubilee Street Pier" (). Blake Pier, Central
The Blake Pier was a ferry pier in Central, Hong Kong. It was named after Sir Henry Arthur Blake, the twelfth governor of Hong Kong. History First generation The first generation of the pier was built in 1900 the end of Pedder Street for serving dignitaries and colonial governors. It had no cover originally. But, in 1909, an Edwardian-style, structural steel pavilion was built on top, providing travellers with shelter. It was demolished in 1965, but the pavilion was preserved, dismantled and rebuilt in Morse Park in Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon as a park shelter. In 2006, the pavilion was again dismantled, restored to its original condition. The renovated structure was relocated to Stanley, where it stands next to Murray House, which was similarly relocated brick by brick.
