City Of Charles Sturt
The City of Charles Sturt is a local government area in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia, stretching to the coast. The council was formed on 1 January 1997 as a result of the amalgamation of the City of Hindmarsh Woodville and the City of Henley and Grange. It comprises a mix of residential, industrial and commercial areas and had a population of 111,759 in 2016. History The first local government to be established in the area was the District Council of Hindmarsh (established in 1853), covering the north west suburbs of Adelaide south of the port and north of the Torrens. The boundaries of the Hindmarsh district council were remarkably similar to the boundaries of the City of Charles Sturt, but the intervening years from 1874 to 1997 saw several divisions and amalgamations in the original council area, leading to the current boundaries. Woodville is a suburb of Adelaide, situated about northwest of Adelaide city centre. It lies within the City of Charles Sturt. The postcode of Woodville is 5011. Brompton is an inner-northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Charles Sturt. History Brompton was established in June 1849 and quickly grew. By October of that year, two-thirds of the formerly "bare common ground ascovered with substantial and genteel cottages, thriving shops and wells of excellent water." Bowden () is an inner northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. History The 'Village of Bowden' was established in 1839 by James Hurtle Fisher, who named it after his native village in Northamptonshire. Bowden had a post office open from 1970 until 1991. Before 1970 the office in the area was named ''Ovingham''; after 1991 the ''Brompton'' office has provided postal services. In October 2008, Premier Mike Rann and Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon announced the purchase of the 10-hectare Clipsal factory site in Bowden to become a new "green village". The City of Woodville was a local government area in South Australia from 1875 to 1993, seated at the inner north west Adelaide suburb of Woodville. History The District Council of Hindmarsh, covering the north west suburbs of Adelaide, had been established since 1853, providing local government to land that was to be Woodville council. In 1874 the most populous parts of the district council successfully lobbied to secede and formed the Town of Hindmarsh adjacent to the Adelaide parklands. The Town of Hindmarsh was a local government area in South Australia from 1874 to 1993, encompassing on the inner north west Adelaide suburbs of Hindmarsh, Bowden and Brompton. History The Corporation of the Town of Hindmarsh was proclaimed on 1 October 1874 by the severance of the "townships of Hindmarsh, Bowden and Brompton" from the District Council of Hindmarsh. River Torrens
The River Torrens , (Karrawirra Parri / Karrawirraparri) is the most significant river of the Adelaide Plains. It was one of the main reasons for the siting of the city of Adelaide, capital of South Australia. It flows from its source in the Adelaide Hills near Mount Pleasant, across the Adelaide Plains, past the city centre and empties into Gulf St Vincent between Henley Beach South and West Beach. The upper stretches of the river and the reservoirs in its watershed supply a significant part of the city's water supply.
