''City of Beautiful Nonsense'' is a 1935 British drama film directed by Adrian Brunel and starring Emlyn Williams, Sophie Stewart and Eve Lister. The film is based on the best-selling 1909 novel of the same name by E. Temple Thurston, which had previously been filmed as a silent by Henry Edwards in 1919. The plot deals with a young woman who is in love with a penniless composer, but believes she must marry a wealthy man to please her father and only realises after various tribulations that she should follow her heart rather than her head. Adrian Brunel
Adrian Brunel (4 September 1892 – 18 February 1958) was an English film director and screenwriter. Brunel's directorial career started in the silent era, and reached its peak in the latter half of the 1920s. His surviving work from the 1920s, both full-length feature films and shorts, is highly regarded by silent film historians for its distinctive innovation, sophistication and wit. With the arrival of talkies, Brunel's career ground to a halt and he was absent from the screen for several years before returning in the mid-1930s with a flurry of quota quickie productions, the majority of which are now classed as lost. Brunel's last credit as director was in a 1940 comedy film, although he worked for a few years more as a "fixer-up" for films directed or produced by friends in the industry. Dorothy Vernon (born Dorothea Christine Arens, November 11, 1875 – October 28, 1970) was a German-born American film actress. Born Dorothea Christine Arens as the daughter of a Lighthouse warden, she emigrated into the United States as late as 1897. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1919 and 1956. She died in Granada Hills, California from heart disease, aged 94. Her son was actor and entertainer Bobby Vernon. Daisy Dormer (born Kezia Beatrice Stockwell, 16 January 1883 – 13 September 1947) was a British music hall performer. Early life Kezia Beatrice Stockwell was born on 16 January 1883 in Southsea to Mary and Henry John Stockwell. Her father was a riveter at HM Dockyard Portsmouth. She began her stage career as a dancer in her home town at the age of six. She was pretty, slight and dark haired and projected a figure of innocence. Career She started her performing career as Dainty Daisy Dimple and appeared in theatres and music halls under this name until February 1901 when she announced in The Era that she ‘will in future be known as Dainty Daisy Dormer’.
