City Park Radio
City Park Radio is a community radio station in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, broadcasting on the frequencies 103.7 FM and 96.5 FM. The station is a member of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. City Park Radio started broadcasting on 7 April 1986, from facilities in Newnham, Tasmania, Newnham as 7LTN-fm. In 1988, the station moved to the 100-year-old City Park Cottage in Launceston's City Park and started using the name City Park Radio. In 1993, work was started on a new studio complex behind the cottage. As well as playing a significant cross-section of genres across the board, City Park Radio also has non-music programming, including the daily reading of articles from The_Examiner_(Tasmania), The Examiner, Launceston's local newspaper. The programming is heavily diversified to include programs in over ten languages. The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) is the peak body and the national representative organisation for community radio and television stations in Australia. The CBAA provide leadership, advocacy and support for members to actively provide independent broadcasting services and to build and strengthen local communities. Newnham is a residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Launceston in the Launceston LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about north of the town of Launceston. The 2016 census recorded a population of 6453 for the state suburb of Newnham. It is a suburb of Launceston. Newnham is located on the East Tamar Highway, on the eastern side of the Tamar River. ''The Examiner'' is the daily newspaper of the city of Launceston and north-eastern Tasmania, Australia. Overview ''The Examiner'' was first published on 12 March 1842, founded by James Aikenhead. The Reverend John West was instrumental in establishing the newspaper and was the first editorial writer. At first it was a weekly publication (Saturdays). The Examiner expanded to Wednesdays six months later. In 1853, the paper was changed to tri-weekly (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays), and first began daily publication on 10 April 1866. This frequency lasted until 16 February the next year. Tri-weekly publication then resumed and continued until 21 December 1877 when the daily paper returned. Betty Jeffrey
Agnes Betty Jeffrey, OAM (14 May 1908 – 13 September 2000) was an Australian writer who wrote about her Second World War nursing experiences in the book ''White Coolies''. Life Jeffrey was a nurse in the 2/10th Australian General Hospital during World War II; she was taken captive by the Japanese Imperial Army and interned in the Dutch East Indies. While in the Japanese internment camp on Sumatra, Jeffrey joined the female vocal orchestra. Betty Jeffrey was freed and returned home on October 24, 1945. She partnered with another former prisoner to open the Melbourne Nurses Memorial Centre in 1949 to honor the heroism of nurses.
