Nairobi War Cemetery (8699711584)
The Nairobi War Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground for the dead of the Second World War located in Nairobi, Kenya. History and previous use The cemetery was opened in 1941, and is the largest war cemetery in East Africa. It houses the graves of casualties from the East African campaign (World War II), East African campaign, some of which were transferred from civil cemeteries and temporary army burial grounds in other parts of Kenya. Nairobi was the operational headquarters of the British Middle East Command during the East African campaign, and the base for the conquest of Jubaland and Italian Somaliland. The cemetery was the location of two field hospitals, No. 87 which operated from June 1943 to December 1945, and No.150 British General Hospital, which operated for a period in 1943. Nairobi South Jewish Cemetery
History of the Jews in Kenya refers to the history of Jewish settlement in Kenya, which began in 1899. There is still a Jewish community living in Kenya today. Background J. Marcus, a Jewish businessman, moved to Nairobi from India in 1899 and established an export business for local produce. In 1903, the British colonial secretary Joseph Chamberlain offered the Zionists a part of the territory in Kenya and Uganda known as the Uganda Program for their own autonomous country at the Sixth Zionist Congress. The suggestion created much controversy among the international Jewish community, and was rejected at the Seventh Zionist Congress in 1905. Although the plan was shelved, 20 Jewish families had settled in Kenya by 1913, most of them in Nairobi. A Jewish cemetery was consecrated in 1907, and the first synagogue in 1913. Lothagam North Pillar Site
The Lothagam North Pillar Site, registered as GeJi9, is an archaeological site on the west side of Lake Turkana in Kenya dating to the Pastoral Neolithic. It is a communal cemetery, built between 3000 BCE and 2300 BCE by the region's earliest herders. It is thought to be eastern Africa's largest and earliest monumental cemetery. Baden-Powell Grave
The graves of Lieutenant-General The 1st Baron Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave, Baroness Baden-Powell, G.B.E., are in Nyeri, Nyeri County, Kenya, near Mount Kenya. Lord Baden-Powell died on 8 January 1941, and is buried in St. Peter's Cemetery in the Wajee Nature Park. When his wife Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, died, her ashes were sent to Kenya and interred beside her husband. Kenya has declared Baden-Powell's grave a national monument, Scouters consider the grave, "one of the most revered shrines and pilgrimage sites in the world." Background Baden-Powell, who knew and liked Kenya, decided to start wintering in Nyeri at the Outspan Hotel of his friend, Eric Sherbrooke Walker. He chose Kenya as his last home because of favorable climate and the political situation in Europe. Baden-Powell knew his health was failing and planned accordingly. Nakuru North Cemetery
Nakuru North Cemetery is a cemetery in Nakuru, Kenya and is one of the oldest in the country. In addition to civilian interments the cemetery also contains Commonwealth war graves from both the First World War (27 burials) and the Second World War (45 burials), as well as two non-war CWGC burials. It is located near to Nakuru Goods railway station. A number of the First World War burials date from November 1918 and were from convalescent camps at Nakuru. There was a Royal Air Force flight training school nearby during the Second World War. The cemetery was later opened up to the public. The cemetery has been full since 2010. Plans have been suggested to turn the cemetery into a recreational park. St Austin's Mission Cemetery
Lavington is a residential suburb of Nairobi. Located within the sub-county of Westlands, it is approximately northwest of the central business district. It is a neighbourhood that hosts the high middle-income to high-income segment of Nairobi residents. It is a low to medium-density residential neighbourhood. The bulk of the area now known as Lavington was originally the St Austin's Mission established by the French Holy Ghost Fathers. The Kirichwa tributary of the Nairobi River runs through the community.
