City Hospital (U.S. TV Series)
''City Hospital'', one of the first medical dramas on American television, was broadcast from 1951 to 1953, first on American Broadcasting Company, ABC and later on CBS. Schedule The ABC version began on November 3, 1951, and ended on April 19, 1952. It was broadcast on CBS from March 25, 1952, until October 1, 1953, creating a period of about three weeks when both networks carried the show. The ABC version was on alternate Saturdays. The CBS version was aired on Tuesday nights until June 1953, alternating with ''Crime Syndicated''. Then it moved to Thursday nights, alternating with ''Place the Face''. Cast and premise The show starred Anne Burr as Dr. Kate Morrow and Melville Ruick as Dr. Barton Crane. Set in a large metropolitan hospital, the show dealt with both the professional and the personal sides of doctors' lives. Anne Burr
Anne Elizabeth Burr, later Anne Burr McDermott (June 10, 1918 - February 1, 2003), was an American actress, known especially for her work on stage and in radio. Early life Burr was born at Emerson Hospital in Boston, the daughter of Eugene Palmer Burr, a manager of a rooming company, and Helen Isabel Cummings. Her parents resided in Weymouth, Massachusetts at the time. Shortly after her birth, Burr's parents moved to Manhattan, where they resided on Riverside Drive. By 1930, her family had moved to Columbus, Ohio, her father's home-state. Burr had one younger brother, Charles Edward Burr (born in 1920 and died in 1938). Career Burr made her theatrical debut in summer stock before turning to Broadway, making her debut there in ''Native Son'' in 1941. She went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions through the 1940s, including ''Detective Story'' and ''The Hasty Heart''. Melville Ruick
Melville Ruick (July 8, 1898 – December 24, 1972) was an American actor. Early years Ruick was born in Boise, Idaho in 1898. His father was a U.S. district attorney in Idaho, and Ruick studied law at the University of California. Military service World War I changed Ruick from a student lawyer to a student pilot. Ruick won his wings in the Air Service, Signal Corps, two weeks before the end of the war. He was the United States' youngest flier in the war at age 17 and became a lieutenant at age 18. During World War II, Ruick returned to uniform as a captain in the USAFF, attached to the Radio Production Unit as a producer-director. Career Ruick worked five years as master of ceremonies for the Fanchon and Marco shows. During the Great Depression, Ruick doubled as a bandleader and as an actor in theatrical stock.
