Circle X
Circle X was an American experimental rock band, formed in 1978 in Louisville, Kentucky. They were part of the late 1970s/early 1980s No Wave scene. Background Early career Circle X formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1978 when art students Bruce Witsiepe and Tony Pinotti abandoned the punk band No Fun to join brothers Rik Letendre and Dave Letendre, who played in the I-Holes – both bands of which were considered the first punk bands in Louisville. By the end of 1978, the four had relocated to New York City, joining in on the No Wave scene and building a reputation for themselves. The band then relocated to Dijon, France, touring for nine months with their new manager, Bernard Zekhri. The band received strong attention from the press and the public, whilst the band were writing new material. An untitled four-song EP, for then-nascent Celluloid Records, was released in 1980. Celestial (Circle X Album)
''Celestial'' is the second and final full-length studio album by Circle X, released in 1994. After experimenting and releasing EPs for more than a decade, Celestial marked the band's first major release since ''Prehistory'' in 1983. Celestial is regarded as "showcasing the diverse, honed ideas in an impressive cycle of thought-provoking bludgeons and sublime dirges", and "Circle X made it seem like no wave never went away." Louisville, Kentucky
Louisville ( , , ) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 28th most-populous city in the United States. Celluloid Records
Celluloid Records, a French/American record label, founded by Jean Georgakarakos (sometimes shortened to Jean Karakos) operated from 1976 to 1989 in New York City, and produced a series of eclectic and ground-breaking releases, particularly in the early to late 1980s, largely under the auspices of de facto in-house producer Bill Laswell. Jean Georgakarakos had previously run a chain of record shops in France, Pop Shop, in cities such as Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Aix-en-Provence. In 1967, he formed jazz record label BYG Records, which collapsed in the mid-1970s. Karakos also produced albums such as Sonny Sharrock's ''Monkie-Pockie Boo'', and some Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry Magma and Gong material. Cropped Out is an annual multi-venue music festival held in Louisville, Kentucky, co-founded in 2010 by Ryan Davis and James Ardery. According to the festival's website, "Cropped Out aims to celebrate a select fistful of contemporary musicians, artists, and artisans whom we feel reflect a greater undercurrent of sonic, visual, and conceptual exploration. It is our intention to turn heads toward the talents of those often omitted, overlooked, or cropped out of 'the big picture'. ''Prehistory'' is the debut studio album by American experimental rock band Circle X. It was recorded in 1981 but was not released until 1983, jointly through record labels Index and Enigma.
