Cinereus Ringtail Possum
The Daintree River ringtail possum (''Pseudochirulus cinereus''), also known as the cinereus ringtail possum, is a species of possum found in northeastern Queensland, Australia. It was long believed to be the same as the Herbert River ringtail possum (''P. herbertensis''), but has recently been separated. The two species differ considerably in appearance. The Daintree River ringtail possum is a cinnamon or brown colour, and has been said, like the lemuroid ringtail possum (''Hemibelideus lemuroides''), to resemble a lemur. It is found in montane tropical rainforest in three separate populations just north of Cairns: on Carbine Tableland, Mount Windsor Tableland and Thornton Peak Thornton Peak is a prominent mountain that rises above the Daintree Rainforest to a height of 1374 m. George Henry Hamilton Tate
George Henry Hamilton Tate (April 30, 1894 – December 24, 1953) was a British-born American zoologist and botanist, who worked as a mammalogist for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. In his lifetime he wrote several books on subjects such as the South American mouse opossums and the mammals of the Pacific and East Asia. Biography He was born in London on April 30, 1894. He had a brother, Geoffrey Tate. In 1912 he migrated from Britain to New York City with his family. From 1912 to 1914 he worked as telegraph operator on Long Island. He then joined the British Army to fight in World War I. At the end of the war, he studied at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England without taking a degree. He then migrated back to the United States and became a field assistant in mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. Phalangeriformes is a paraphyletic suborder of about 70 species of small to medium-sized arboreal marsupials native to Australia, New Guinea, and Sulawesi. The species are commonly known as possums, gliders, and cuscus. The common name "possum" for various Phalangeriformes species derives from the creatures' resemblance to the opossums of the Americas (the term comes from Powhatan language ''aposoum'' "white animal", from Proto-Algonquian *''wa·p-aʔɬemwa'' "white dog"). Herbert River Ringtail Possum
The Herbert River ringtail possum (''Pseudochirulus herbertensis'') is a species of possum found in northeastern Queensland, Australia. It is a dark brown to black species, sometimes with a white belly. The Herbert River ringtail possum was long considered conspecific with the cinereus ringtail possum (''P. cinereus''), despite the fact that they are very different in appearance. They are, however, the only members of their New Guinea-centred genus found in Australia. The Herbert River ringtail possum is restricted to tropical rainforest from Mount Lee, west of Ingham, to the Lamb Range, west of Cairns. Lemuroid Ringtail Possum
The lemuroid ringtail possum (''Hemibelideus lemuroides''), also known as the lemur-like ringtail possum or the brushy-tailed ringtail, is a truly singular member of the ringtail possum group. It was once thought that they were gliding possums (''Petauroides volans''); ''Hemibelideus'' literally translates as "half-glider" (''belideus'' being a diminutive form of ''Petaurus'', meaning "glider"). They are similar to lemurs in their facial characteristics, with short snouts, large, forward-facing eyes and small ears, but similar to gliders in their musculo-skeletal adaptations to accommodate a leaping lifestyle. Their long, prehensile tail is a further adaptation to their arboreal habitat. Carbine Tableland
The Mount Carbine Tableland is a plateau in Far North Queensland, Australia. Part of the Great Dividing Range, it lies in the Shire of Mareeba 15 km west of Mossman, and 1,460 km north-west of Brisbane, reaching an altitude of 1,383 m above sea level. It is largely covered with tropical rainforest and receives an annual rainfall total of 2,000 mm. The tablelands are part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage area.
