The som (Kyrgyz: сом; ISO code: KGS; sign: с) is the currency of Kyrgyzstan. Etymology The official name of the Soviet currency in Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, and Uzbek was ''soum'', and this name appeared written on the back of banknotes, among the texts for the value of the note in all 15 official languages of the USSR. The word ''som'' (alternatively transliterated "soum" or "sum") means "pure" in Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uyghur and Uzbek, as well as in many other Turkic languages. Tölömüsh Okeyevich Okeyev (; 11 September 1935 – 18 December 2001) was a Kyrgyz screenwriter and film director born in Bokonbayevskoye. In 1973, he was a member of the jury at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival. Janysh Osmonovich Kulmambetov (Kyrgyz and Russian: Жаныш Осмонович Кулмамбетов;) (born 1955) is a Kyrgyz writer-screenwriter, playwright, stage and film director, screenwriter, producer, editor, journalist, and theater critic. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Studies and was named People's Writer of the Kyrgyz Republic (2021). Biography After graduating from high school, Janysh entered the theatre school at Kyrgyz State Academic Drama Theater (in Frunze), from which he graduated in 1974 with honors. Izya Abramovich Gershtein (Russian Изя Абрамович Герштейн; born on 22 June 1923 in Kiev, USSR – 13 February 2013 in Haifa, Israel) was a notable Kyrgyz Soviet documentary filmmaker, cameraman and director.
