Cindy Lamoureux
Cindy Lamoureux (born November 13, 1991) is a Canadian provincial politician, who was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for the riding of Burrows in the 2016 election. She defeated NDP incumbent Melanie Wight, who had held the riding since the 2011 election. She is from an active political family in western Canada. She is the daughter of federal Member of Parliament Kevin Lamoureux, and her uncle Darrin Lamoureux previously served as the leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party. On April 21, 2017, she announced that she was running to become the leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party. Former Manitoba Liberal leader and longtime MLA Jon Gerrard and entrepreneur and teacher Dougald Lamont also contested the leadership. The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba (french: Assemblée législative du Manitoba) is the deliberative assembly of the Manitoba Legislature in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Fifty-seven members are elected to this assembly at provincial general elections, all in single-member constituencies with first-past-the-post voting. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Manitoba, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. The Manitoba Legislative Building is located in central Winnipeg. Jon Gerrard (born October 13, 1947) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1993 to 1997, and was a secretary of state in the government of Jean Chrétien. He was the leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party from 1998 until 2013, and the member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for River Heights since 1999. Early life and private career Gerrard was born in Birmingham, England, and grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Franco-Manitobans (french: Franco-Manitobains) are French Canadians or Canadian francophones living in the province of Manitoba. According to the 2016 Canadian Census, 40,975 residents of the province stated that French was their mother tongue. In the same census, 148,810 Manitobans claimed to have either full or partial French ancestry. River Heights (electoral District)
River Heights is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1957, and formally came into existence in the 1958 provincial election. The riding is located in the south-central region of the City of Winnipeg. River Heights is bordered on the east by Lord Roberts and Fort Rouge, to the south by Fort Whyte, to the north by Wolseley, and to the west by Tuxedo. The riding's population in 1996 was 19,950. The riding's character is middle-class and upper-middle class. In 1999, the average family income was $77,701, and the unemployment rate was 5.90%. River Heights includes many of Winnipeg's oldest and most stately homes: the average value of dwelling house in the riding in 1999 was $117,937. The Liberal Party of Manitoba leadership election of 2017 was held on October 21, 2017, at the Victoria Inn Conference Centre in Winnipeg. The election was called as a result of the party leader Rana Bokhari's announcing her pending resignation on May 7, 2016 (she resigned on September 24, 2016), following the April 19, 2016, Manitoba general election. Rules To be nominated, a candidate must have collected the signatures of at least 100 party members, at least 10 from each of the party's six regions, submitted a valid police record check and tax return for the most recent year, and paid a non-refundable deposit of $5,000 or have sold an equivalent number of memberships in the party. Dougald Lamont (born April 23, 1969) is a Canadian politician and leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party. He is a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, representing the constituency of St. Boniface (provincial electoral district), St. Boniface since a by-election held on July 17, 2018. Early life Lamont holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in English literature from the University of Manitoba.
