Ciclopaseo In Quito, Ecuador
The Ciclopaseo is a project created by Biciaccion Foundation. It was administrated by this organization from 2003 until 2007, from there it was organized by the local organization Ciclopolis until 2017. Nowadays the local traffic law enforcement organisation (Agencia Metropolitana de Tránsito by the Spanish name) is administering the project. A route of 30 km running from the North to South of the city is closed to traffic every Sunday from 8 am until 2 pm to give preference to cyclists and pedestrians. Ciclovía (, ), also ''ciclovia'' or ''cyclovia'', is a Spanish term that means "cycleway", either a permanent bike path or the temporary closing of certain streets to automobiles for cyclists and pedestrians, a practice sometimes called open streets. Origins in Colombia The inspiration for Ciclovías is credited to Bogotá, Colombia, although the National Capital Commission in Canada's capital Ottawa already organised open streets for active transportation in 1970. Parque La Carolina
Parque La Carolina is a 165.5-acre (670,000 m2) park in the centre of the Quito central business district, bordered by the avenues Río Amazonas, de los Shyris, Naciones Unidas, Eloy Alfaro, and de la República. History This park started from the expropriation of the farm La Carolina in 1939. The design of the park was made by the Dirección Metropolitana de Planificación Territorial (DMPT). Pope John Paul II headed a great Catholic mass in the park during his visit to Ecuador in 1985, and a giant Christian cross has been built in this place. Usage Quiteños gather at La Carolina mostly on weekends to play soccer, basketball, and ecua-volley, which is an Ecuadorian variation of volleyball with less emphasis on spiking, allowing more of a throw. Paco Rosendo Moncayo Gallegos (born October 8, 1940, in Quito) is an Ecuadorian politician and retired general who was Metropolitan Mayor of Quito from 2000 to 2009. Career During his military career, he was the Commander in Chief of the Army in the Alto Cenepa War between Ecuador and Perú. He served as a National Deputy from 1998 to 2000 and was a member of both the National Security Council and its Consultative Assembly for Foreign Affairs. In 2000 Paco Moncayo was elected Metropolitan Mayor of Quito on behalf of the Party of the Democratic Left, and he was re-elected for a second term in 2004. He was co-president of United Cities and Local Governments as of November 2007 and was longlisted for the 2008 World Mayor award.
