Cicerone
Cicerone ( ) is an old term for a guide who conducts visitors and sightseers to museums, galleries, etc., and explains matters of archaeological, antiquarian, historic or artistic interest. The word is presumably taken from Marcus Tullius Cicero, as a type of learning and eloquence. The ''Oxford English Dictionary'' finds recorded examples of the use earlier in English than Italian, the earliest quotation being from Joseph Addison's ''Dialogue on Medals'' (published posthumously 1726). It appears that the word was first applied to learned antiquarians who showed and explained to foreigners the antiquities and curiosities of the country (quotation of 1762 in the ''New English Dictionary''). "The Cicerones", a short story by Robert Aickman (turned into a 2002 short film), uses the idea of cicerones as people who conduct visitors and sightseers as a metaphor in a tale about a man who is guided to his doom by various characters in a cathedral. Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark is the ballpark at the University of California, Irvine in Irvine, California, United States. It is the home stadium of the UC Irvine Anteaters baseball team. Opened in 2002, the stadium has 908 seats and can accommodate up to an additional 2,500 people on a grass berm. In 2009, the ballpark's field was named for Ralph J. Cicerone, the university's chancellor from 1998 to 2005. Museum docent is a title given in the United States of America to people who serve as guides and educators for the institutions they serve, usually as a volunteer (unpaid) position. The English word itself is derived from the Latin word ''docēns'', the present active participle of ''docēre'' (to teach, to lecture). Cognates of this word are found in several extant Romance Languages (and languages influenced by Romance languages) and are often associated with university professors or teachers in general. For example, in Spanish language, the word "docente" (from the same Latin root) means "teacher". In many cases, docents also conduct research utilizing the institution's facilities. The title "docent" is not widely used outside the United States in English languages, with the terms "guide", "facilitator", or "educator" preferred. A beer sommelier, also called a cicerone, is a trained professional, working in the hospitality and alcoholic beverage industry, who specializes in the service and knowledge of beer, similar to a traditional wine sommelier. The knowledge required for certification includes an understanding of styles, brewing, ingredients, history of beer and brewing, glassware, beer service, draught systems, beer tasting, and food pairings. In the 18th and 19th centuries, a bear-leader was a colloquialism for a man who escorted young men of rank or wealth on their travels, such as young gentlemen on the Grand Tour. The role of bear-leader blended elements of tutor, guardian, chaperon and companion. A late example in literature can be seen in the ambitious Oxford tutor (Mr Samgrass of All Souls College, Oxford) hired to keep an increasingly alcoholic young man out of harm's way – and out of the way – in ''Brideshead Revisited''. Cicerone Press is an English publisher, founded in 1969, specialising in guidebooks for walkers, climbers, trekkers and cyclists. The company's first publication was a climbing guide to the English Lake District, and over the past 50 years they have published a range of guidebooks covering walking, trekking and cycling around the world. History The company was founded in 1969 when the late Walt Unsworth and Brian Evans, in frustration at the lack of suitable climbing guides to areas of the English Lake District, came together to produce a climbing guide. History Cicerone was founded as an artistic dance club on 26 October 1910. Over the years the club evolved into a multisports club, including a Korfball, Football and Basketball team. Cicerone Theodorescu (February 9, 1908 – February 18, 1974) was a Romanian poet. Born in Bucharest, his father was a laborer for ''Căile Ferate Române'' state railway. After attending high school in his native city, he studied at the literature and philosophy department of the University of Bucharest. He then taught in various high schools and worked as an editor and reporter. A contributor to the left-wing press, he signed, together with other pro-democracy intellectuals, protests against the country's drift toward fascism. After the King Michael Coup of 1944, Theodorescu held important posts at ''Centrala Cărții'' publishing overseer, was vice president of the Romanian Writers' Society from 1944 and editor-in-chief of ''Viața Românească'' magazine from 1948. Russell Cicerone (born November 17, 1994) is an American soccer player who currently plays for Sacramento Republic of the USL Championship. Early life Russell Cicerone was born on November 17, 1994, to parents David and Mary. Cicerone grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he attended Brother Rice High School. Cicerone played on the school's soccer team, and served as team captain for one year. He also played soccer at Vardar Freiburg Academy as a high school senior.
